Scandal explained
Anyone here drive a Volkswagen car?

They fucked up, big time. I was laughing last week when the CEO claimed he was staying put, ha, 24 hours in you knew he couldn't survive this, give me a break.
Goes to show, you can't never beat Toyota.
Audi has also confirmed 2.1 million of their cars involved in scandal. http://www.wsj.com/articles/audi-confirms-2-1-million-cars-involved-in-emissions-scandal-1443436979
@bmanva:
Last time I checked, they also owned Lamborghini.
I am pretty sure both Porsche and Lamborghini are not affected by the scandal because they are expensive cars, which they just raise the price and pay the emission penalty, just like Benz and BMW.
Lambo aren't affected. But Porsche might be, the head of their engine development division quit amidst the scandal. http://gtspirit.com/2015/09/25/vw-scandal-audis-ulrich-hackenberg-and-porsches-wolfgang-hatz-to-quit/
As someone from Norway... I've never encountered a test for fuel consumption that was anywhere close to the actual usage. They are pretty much all a waste for me.
Anyhow I think it is pretty bad that VW did this. Some emissions being 40 times higher than allowed and only passed because of this. That's cheating.
Funny that this should even be an issue in America given that half of the voting population sides with the far right that wants to kill the EPA and it's burdensome evil environmental protections and standards and rules in the face of threats like pollution coming from energy industry in form of fracking waste, oil spills, air pollution. But worse IMO is the apathy for these things.
I get why what VW did was a big issue, what I'm baffled by is why the general population and regulatory agencies even care since they all seem to ignore everything else.
Sounds like the ideal time to get down to the vw dealership and clean up on desperation sale prices.
I think what's happening in terms of energy consumption, is far worse than any supposed pollution caused by cars. The real polluters of this world (and even the real energy wasters) are mostly factories. Funny how people keep denying the massive pollution load, factories have on Earth's atmosphere and nature.
As for cars, they are a thing of the past. But as long as the fundamental of the world's economy is "If they but it then make it and if it they don't **** it." I think in addition to science being blocked by money-hungry people, we're going to have a real catastrophe on our hands the extent of which won't be clear to us until later generations.
The Earth's resources are limited you know.

That's not really factual. Here's the EPA's breakdown of GHG contribution percent by sources (industry is only bit higher than transportation).
@Aljosa23: VW is not the only one who have done this
Not the only one to do what? It wasn't just that they lied about their emissions. They installed computer chips or some kind of device to fool the tests that were done. That's malfeasance.

i think it's naive to think they're the only ones
