Alright, i find this funny but frustrating. My girlfriend and I are arguing how books and games compare to each other. We're trying to find arguments against each other. I'm telling my girlfriend how games can offer what a book does and MORE. What do u guys think? Here are her arguments.

1. a book has more depth and builds upon ur imagination

2. when ur looking at something(i.e. graphics in games) u dont imgaine it coz its already there

3. when u read a book it makes u picture hoiw a person place or thing could look like so thast why its different for each person whereas games each person sees the same thing its not unique in that way

4. movies and games dont build character profiles well

5. u play a game and u wont remeber it afterwards, u read a book and it comes back to you

6. there are more chances of picking up a good book than picking up a game with a solid story

7. u see actions games dont have a good stoy line but action within a book has a good storyline

8. games dont have those little unexpected twists at the end

9. a game is like a fairytale good when ur reading it but its a typical story line, typcial ending and typical complicaion

10. most people dont play games for the storyline

11. games arent advertised coz they ahve a good storyline they're advertised thru sex or violence

12. people dont go to buy a game because(mainly) it has a good storyline (Repeated point)

13. yea but a game doesnt imspire people to amke a change in their lives its doesnt raise awareness of issues happening around them in the world a game will not be abt a person whose suffering in afganistan

14. games' impact can only go so far games change to suit people, but books are written to change peple

15. a context does not mke a game thats the minor bit

Don't blame me for bad spellin, it's exactly what she said. lol.

Games can be far more visceral, immersive and cinematic than a novel because you are made to seem as though you are actually there in the game. Would she rubbish films? I doubt it.

No imagination? Well sorry sister but it took people to design those areas, worlds and their fiction.

Games don't have good storylines?

Hmm:

Mass Effect.

Bioshock.

Thief 1-3.

Half-Life.

The Witcher.

I could go on...

Games are made up of images, music and sound. And as such they made up of artistic merit.

You could always argue that videogames have a social aspect to them or that videogames have a much more indepth culture surrounding them.

I guess her lack of experience with games has made her a bit naive in that respect -.-, apparently no convincing can compare to actually playing the game.

1. a boolk has more depth and builds upon ur imagination
OK

2. when ur looking at something(i.e. graphics in games) u dont imgaine it coz its already there
Agreed

3. when u read a book it makes u picture hoiw a person place or thing could look like so thast why its different for each person whereas games each person sees the same thing its not unique in that way
So Basically point 2:?

4. movies and games dont build character profiles well
False. Not all games but there are those with deep character profiles.

5. u play a game and u wont remeber it afterwards, u read a book and it comes back to you
Completely not true. I remember games just as much , if not more then books.

6. there are more chances of picking up a good book than picking up a game with a solid story
True

7. u see actions games dont have a good stoy line but action within a book has a good storyline
Alright

8. games dont have those little unexpected twists at the end
Not true. Some games have wicked twists at the end that just scream for a sequal. Has she heared of MGS4?

9. a game is like a fairytale good when ur reading it but its a typical story line, typcial ending and typical complicaion
For the most part yah, but that really depends on the type of game your playing.

10. most people dont play games for the storyline
Final Fantasy Fans disagree

11. games arent advertised coz they ahve a good storyline they're advertised thru sex or violence
True but most gamers are guys, we love sex and violence

12. people dont go to buy a game because(mainly) it has a good storylin
Same as Point #10

13. yea but a game doesnt imspire people to amke a change in their lives its doesnt raise awareness of issues happening around them in the world a game will not be abt a person whose suffering in afganistan
Ok i guess but really unless im reading a book about people suffering in afganistan i doubt the book is teaching me much about a person whose suffering in afganistan

14. games' impact can only go so far games change to suit people, but books are written to change peple
Repeat Point #13

15. a context does not mke a game thats the minor bit
Thats cause gameplay is important, since it is a game

There different forms of media and you need a certain skill to do both. Reading is better for you and builds up your vocab and spelling skills. I enjoy both, at the moment I enjoy reading more though.

Well it's my personal opinion. When playing a game, I usually get bored after a while and do something else. When reading a good book, I get immersed in it and don't stop reading until I finish it.

Those points suck. Everything from point 4 is generalising. That's like saying a book without a wizard in it can't be good.

Well, books are generally better than games imho... but if she is talking about books like Twilight... then tell her you win by defult. If she is talking about books like To Kill A Mockingbird or Lord of the Rings, then you have an arguement to reckon with. Tell her to play Final Fanasty, MGS, Fire Emblem, and TWEWY and then base a REAL opinion around games with stories.

Just tell her to go play kotor/the witcher. It will counter many an argument.

I value GOOD books more than games, but in the end they are both completely different.

Correlation does not neccessarily equate to causation, but I am going to say it anyways:

I have never met a person successful in life who did not read, nor have I met someone who read and could not be deemed at least somewhat successful in their life.

Ok, you could've picked so many WAY better games than those.

I like both things, they can't compare. It's like saying movies vs. music. I can't live without either. I relax with both books and games, depending what I want to.

Try show her Okami if you want her to get interested in games with a storyline.. Try show her the wonders of old ps1 games like Tomba or Rayman for the heck of it. Show her a good shooter you like a lot. Tease her mind with the games, do not force them onto her.

Good books are better, but some video games are excellent too and satisfy her arguments. Take Morrowind for example. Best storyline ever. Better than 80% of the books I have read.

Xionethic

  1. Could say the exact same thing about games.
  2. So? that doesn't make the game's atmosphere any less appealing.
  3. the interaction with games is more immersive because I control the protagonist/hero...etc, when I play a horror game for example, I feel the intensity of the situation more than movies, let alone books.
  4. Wrong, there are alot of games that had background story about their characters, RPGs are the best example.
  5. There are alot of games that I remember than books.
  6. Ofcourse, books are far more in numbers produced than games, and almost all game developers are only programmers that don't care about putting a good story in a game, however, this generation of games are becoming more mature than past generations and there are alot of ambitious games out now and coming that includes great stories, Lost Odyssey and Metal Gear Solid 4 are two great examples of games released this year alone and next year we have Heavy Rain to name few.
  7. God of War series and Heavenly sword, enough said.
  8. God of War series, Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear solid series, specially MGS3, Final Fantasy 10, Shadow of the colossus, Assassins Creed.
  9. Read the above, same answer.
  10. Because the industry is still young, only 35 years old, however, it is one of the fastest evolving and maturing.
  11. Really?are you serious? .
  12. Read number 10.
  13. Because most of the games are based of imaginary worlds and not realistic and it is intended to make people forget about the real world for a bit and have fun, there are realistic games but they don't offer what are you suggesting, these games just represent realistic worlds and shallaw stories, there are exceptions though, like the metal gear series.
  14. Read above #13.
  15. Because it is a game after all.

I hope I've clarified somethings about vidoegames and if you want her to see the games I've mentioned, just youtube it :)

Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time

all of your girlfriend's stereotypes of video games can be disproven with this one game
