I am reading up about what happened in the war in Iraq but a few things confuse me.

When Iraq was invaded, what force was countering the US? Was the Iraqi government corrupt before? Weren't people in Iraq happy when they got invaded because it was ending corruption?I'm just having a hard time understanding what enemy they were actually facing considering I read that the US is helping Iraqi forces?

I think most people would rise up to defend their country even if they weren't a big fan of the government. The only real pro-american faction in Iraq during the war were the Kurds. But that was mainly because Saddam had tried to exterminate them. The Shias weren't big fans of Saddam, in fact they were heavily oppressed by him and his minority sunni government, but I'm certain they weren't fans of a western country invading their homeland.

Initally we were fighting against tyhe Iraqi Army. That government has since been dismantled and a new one put in place. The Iraqi Army which we are now supporting is a different Army than that which we were fighting a few years ago.

Okay, it makes more sense now. Do you know if the general public happy with the new government?

The U.S. fought against the Iraqi army and the Republican Guard. The U.S. had the Iraqi Army disbanded, but eventually created a new Iraqi Army to fight to protect the Iraqi governmnet so that we didn't have to fight the insurgents on our own.

Oh and corruption was the least bit of a problem with the Administration of President Saddam Hussein al Tikriti, the main problem was that he massacred anyone who criticised him.

The U.S. initially was fighting the Iraqi government. We toppled the government pretty easily, and then there was a brief period in time where we were greeted as liberators (yes, Dick Chaney was right to an extent) by the Iraqi people. That didn't last too long because the U.S. really ****ed up and didn't maintain order and things got chaotic, to say the least.

Well plus Al Qaida and Iran started getting involved in and destablizing the place and the U.S. did make the stupid move of disbanding the Iraqi Army which made the Iraqi soldiers unemployed and angry and many got jobs working for the insurgents.

We basically went into Iraq to build more U.S. Bases in the middle east, helping their country out a little bit as well. Mostly for the bases though, cause we needed more over there.

The ultimate mistake the US made was the Absolute Dissolution of the Iraqi Government and Millitary. In a single act of stupidity they sent Iraq from a function country to a complete dysfunctional mess almost overnight. Everything from law and order to power and water was removed by doing so. and the unemployment skyrocketed. In hindsight they should have removed the Iraqi Hierarchy and slowly instilled change over time rather then destroying everything and attempting to rebuild the country as the US saw fit.

Guerrillas and other privatemilitia. They don't need Government issued weapons and uniforms to organize and oppose a foreign military.
