I often grapple with this in my question a lot seeing how I have extremely fond memories of the 90s for so many reasons. I feel like everything from the music, the video games, movies, government, the economy, and just the overall Zeitgiest of the time was just the greatest that has ever been. So what is your take on this, was the 90s a truly unmatchable decade or is it mostly just tainted by people's unjustified nostalgia?

Probably nostalgia... Though there were definitely some great moments. Then again, every decade has its great moments.

The early-mid 00's were pretty good, but it all went downhill starting in 2007.

The 90s was a better time to grow up in. Sure we didn't have as much advanced technology, but there will never be a day that I wish I'd had a smartphone instead of a treehouse growing up, or a top of the line computer instead of waterguns and fast food toys.

Things were so much simpler back then. Saturday morning cartoons were awesome, breakfast cereal and snacks were awesome, and getting bumps and scratches and war wounds was just part of being a kid. Nobody over analyzed the "hidden meanings" or how "appropriate" everything and anything on TV was or assumed it would make us all violent or mental. Nobody nitpicked at how many calories or grams of fat or trans fats or aspartame or artificial blah blah blah was in foods, and when we fell down and hurt ourselves we walked it off, we didn't get rushed to the hospital for every scratch and cut.

The 90s was just better. Everything was cheaper, too. Gas was less than a buck a liter then. I doubt the next generation will ever see that.

EDIT: Gamespot likes to make things into walls of text :)

Legends of the Hidden Temple, DBZ, the best fads, Clinton, and the Gameboy are what made the 90's awesome.

Probably nostalgia... For me it was great sure, but then again I was 16 when it started and exited at 26 (obviously). That's an interesting chunk of a persons life - bright eyed and bushy tailed youth with the right level of naivity to digest and enjoy many first-time life experiences as they tread the path to adulthood.

Sadly cynisism is something we have to fend off as we grow older, and it becomes increasingly harder to recapture that feeling of experiencing something fantastic for the first time.

So yes, in a rather long winded and unnecessary answer to your question, it may have been the best decade purely by virtue of my age at the time.

I'd say nostalgia. I can't think of much that stands out in that decade.

I'm 14, born in 96, and can say the 90'z were better. I first started kicking into conciousness when I was 3, and it was 98 then. I was walking, making short conversation, all that good stuff. I never said much, just walked around and saw what was goin on, and I was pretty happy. I started playing Sonic and stuff back in 99, which I also remember the first grand new year or whatever celebration. Damn that was nice. Hotdogs, Friends, adults, gifts, SONIC 2, and all that **** It was just so right. Things werent as violent, people were more considerate, people werent as ignorant. It was good. I couold talk when I was 4, but just decided not to and lead my parents to beleive I couldnt talk. I only did that because I didnt really like talking. And I was just lookin around the place I lived, just being happy. Then came 2004. I dont know why, I just started seeming less happy. It seems like everything just stopped bein so cool around 2004, dont know why. But FOR ME.... In a battle of the decades, the 90's take the cake.

It wasn't nostalgia. 90's was a really good decade. Johnny Bravo, good television stations, good songs, Nintendo 64... need I say more?

It was the best just for the simple fact that I was born at the start of the decade.

Nostalgia.

Most people have some attachment to the time when they were younger because they hadn't learned to be cynical yet.

It was a great decade. There were awesome cartoons, awesome movies, awesome music, it was before everything was internet and cellphone based, people were more social back then, mtv played music videos and beavis and butthead, and video games were more satisfying to play. I'm glad that I lived through the 90's. Everything went downhill in the 2000's. I always think that society would be a lot better off without the internet and texting, sometimes.

Its not nostalgia. If you are into the internet, computers, video games etc. (like i assume most people here are) then the 90s was a massive boom decade for all those technologies... crap kinda petered out in the 2000+ era tho.

I was born in 88 so I can remember things from 1992 onwards. I can tell you the 90s wern't that great. music = meh, fashion = meh. Some things were good like TV and cartoons, but remember the crappy CGI in movies?

Purely nostalgia. People will always view the era they grew up in through rose-tinted glasses.

Up until now I would say yes. I have hope for the future.

My Reasons:

  • golden era of rap music - UGK, 2Pac, Wu-Tang, ATCQ, Spice 1, early 36 Mafia, OutKast, etc.
  • other genres were great as well - Rage Against the Machine & Sublime
  • cartoons were much better
  • MTV was actually Music TV
  • Better athletes: Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Roy Jones Jr., Oscar De La Hoya, Barry Sanders, Ricky Williams (at Texas), Brett Farve, young A-Rod, Ken Griffey Jr., etc.
  • life was more simplistic for kids and easygoing

Yeah, those decades were great. Well, as long as you were the right race and on the right place on the social-economic ladder they were.

Super Soaker water guns, Nintendo Sixty Four, (Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Fantastic 4, Iron Man Xmen) The animated series. 90s were great for me but mainly for nostalgia, I grew up there and it's way better than today's era. My lil cousin is 10 and he has a smart phone, when I was 10 I could only play "Snake" on my dad's blocky Nokia.

technology was a the perfect spot in the 90s. the internet was available but wasnt that big of a deal. video games looked more simple so a lot more use of imagination instead of staring at crappy real life graphics of today. i think 2000-2010 was pretty boring. the internet fully took over our lives

Things were better before the internet. People use to actually be people and not just some 1's and 0's you know from online. Technology is killing society. The 90's were Mankind's swan song.

Today I keep in regular contact with friends scatter around the globe. Some I'm met in person, some I've not, but all of whom I've met online. My life has been enriched by these people. If that's killing society then I say keep killing.

The best decade according to my Grandpa was the '50s. For my parents, it was the '60s and '70s. For my generation, it was the '80s and '90s. 10-20 years from now, today will be the best decade ever. Best decade, it seems to me, seems often to be when ever that person was growing up.

I think the 90's were probably the best decade to grow up in. For kids, school was pretty good, there were good cartoons, cool toys, and having fun meant hanging out with your friends doing real activities.

Now it's a bunch of garbage such as terrible disney shows and music, kids texting on cellphones and being glued to a computer instead of getting out for a change.
