Ok, so I've been thinking for quite some time now that the stickied WAYLT threads are pretty much pointless. Why? Well, the threads are supposed to let you share what you are currently listening so that others might get to know new songs/artists and broaden their horizons, but seriously, has any of you ever found an unknown song you liked in a WAYLT thread? Do you even bother clicking the song links for those of us who provide them? I really think all the threads end up being is a huge list of song names that no one even bothers to read.

Also, ever since the new rules were implemented the threads are supposed to generate discussion about the songs being posted, and we are even encouraged to provide aditional info on the album, artist, etc., but does this actually happen? I don't think I've ever seen anyone ever post any aditional info, and I also haven't seen any discussion whatsoever in these threads, usually all everyone does is go in, post their current song and go out. Like I said, all the threads end up being is a huge list of song names no one pays any attention to, and on the rare ocassions where someone actually bothers commenting on someone else's post it's just a "cool song", or "great band", or "Ilove that album" or whatever, so people only comment on stuff they've already heard, which isn't supposed to be the point of WAYLT threads.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not lecturing anyone, because I'm actually "guilty" of all of this, too. All I'm saying is WAYLT threads never seem to work the way they're supposed to, they never fulfill their goal, because a lot of us don't bother listening to what others post, we don't provide info, and therefore we don't discover new music and we don't generate discussion. So, is there really a point in making these stickied WAYLT threads?

Of course, since the threads go on for ages and reach insane amounts of posts, I don't keep an eye on every single one of them from beginning to end, so I am just speaking from what I've seen, and could be terribly mistaken. So, are they pointless? Am I just crazy and have no idea what I'm talking about? Is there any actual discussion in WAYLT threads? Have you ever discovered new music in WAYLT threads?

What do YOU think OT?

Generalizations are fun. OfficialBed seems to have a similar taste in music, so I pay attention to what he posts to find new stuff.

Well then I'm mistaken, that's why I asked and why I included a poll in the first place...

I didn't mean to generalize, I guess I'll edit that...

I think it's ridiculous they had to implement rules for the thread. They should have just left the thread alone, and personally it's about as pointless as Roll Calls nowadays, but these thread traditions are grandfathered in, so you can either worry about why it's there, or just ignore it and move on.

Yeah, that's supposed to be the point, sharing songs we like, all I'm asking is do most users even hear the songs being shared? Do the threads fulfill their purpose? Or does everyone just come in, share their own list and walk away without listening to what others posted?

I never post in the thread. If someone wants to know what I'm listening to at the moment, they can look at my Last.fm.

Like many things it really depends on who is posting and who is reading. Sometimes people will post musical selections that look interesting to me or bring up a strong feeling of nostaliga and I will say something. But more often than not if I see something interesting I will just check it out myself and not leave a comment mentioning that although I have done so before.

Although it's not necessarily a strong topic for musical discussion I think it is good as a point of interest regarding the posters. If there's a person that doesn't generally post a lot but is posting regularly in the WAYLT you will at least get a decent grasp on what kind of music they like and this could be used as a point of discussion later in another thread when you are interacting with that person.

Personally I've received and given many reaction regarding my posts in the thread. I'll admit that I don't put as much effort into them as I used to as it became somewhat tiresome to track down Youtube examples, extra photos, and MySpace/official website of some of the artists that I listen to. But I have learned to place stock in what some music that people are posting due to the history of their selections.

WAYLT would be rather difficult to make an actual discussion thread as it's not focused and thus inherently it becomes hard to initiate a good discussion and keep it going. The somewhat chaotic nature of the posts as they veer all over the musical landscape just don't make for a solid discussion. But again, they do make for some interesting profiling which is what I believe it's good for.

Interesting reply, I hadn't really thought of it like that...

As for your experience regarding reactions, it's pretty much the opposite of what I've experienced, I don't think I've ever seen anyone say anything that's not along the lines of "I love that band", and I've never got any comments regarding my contributions. Then again, my metal picks are not very popular, even among metalheads. :P

Yeah but you never know. I don't get too many responses but over the years people have suddenly brought up bands that they listen to that I originally posted from months or years ago. They didn't say anything at the time but it's common for people not to do so.

Hmm, could it be then that I've given up too easily...? I think I'll post another song, but I'll wait for the new WAYLT, I think there's not really a point in posting on a thread with THAT many posts. That's just me, though, and it's not exclusive to WAYLT. :P

Have you ever visited Gametrailers WAYLT forum? It's a lot more elitist and filled with snobs, but the posts there are fantastic. I actually listen to the people there because they know what they're talking about. It's a much smaller community so the few that care to post in that section tend to care about music

Hmmmm...that's odd as that WAYLT looks exactly like our except that people tend to post pics of the albums they are listening to much like I always do. Other than that there appears to be little to no discussion of the music they are listening to. Is this just an exceptionally quiet version of their regular WAYLT threads?

My only problem now is I already have way more music left to hear than I can handle even without adding any more to that list, and I'm broke, so I still haven't started getting any of those albums, and I don't like to download music because the files are rarely 320 kbps, which is what I'm aiming for now that I left 128 behind...

I ended up just thinking Off topic vs. Non-gaming. Gametrailers has a media section which is probably 75 percent music-oriented so the discussion is a lot more concentrated, and their WAYLT just has better reccomendations overall. The people that post there also tend to discuss music a lot in the regular media forums. Sorry for my jaded post structure, it's 3AM >_>

I posted a "song" named ´You won´t read this - proove me wrong´, and just as i suspected, nothing happened.

WAYLT is for the most, quite pointless for others to read. I mean -- i honestly think you could get away with linking porn site after porn site in there, easily. =)

It is pretty pointless, but I suppose its a way of finding new music and sharing your music taste with the world, at least people know a little more about you.

Anyway, I already knew they existed and they're not really my cup of tea... I, on the other hand, am listening to my favorite band Lacrimosa, which I'm sure you didn't know about, so what about you? Do you want to know more about this unknown band now that you know they exist? :P

Most users use WAYLT for a +1 in post count. Most of them don't care what others are listening to.

WAYLT's are legal spam threads. Mods want to cut down on spam, but there's stickied spam on the ceiling, and no one bothers to take it down. I see mods lock threads because "it doesn't cause discussion" or something of that sort.WAYLT's should cause discussion and not just post what song you're listening to. I mean, there's last.fm for these things. It would be beneficial to just have a last.fm sig or have it somewhere. But most users don't want to discuss music stuff in WAYLT, they just want to post their songs.

WAYLT's are pretty much useless, and it doesn't serve the function of music discussion. I would rather see a Rap vs Rock thread because atleast it generates some discussion.

Edit: GS screwed up my html formatting as usual (even though I didn't even use HTML in this post.)

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see it, all I ever see in WAYLT is a huge list of isolated song names.

I alwasy thought of them as a way to get more posts. Personnally, they are pretty useless to me seeing as I don't listen to music. *Puts on invisibility cloak*

If I'm unfamiliar with an artist someone posts I'll look them up, I really look forward to anything Daemon posts.

It's a great way to explore more songs and artists, that's the only reason I think it's somewhat useful. Other than that, I don't really see many conversations in a WAYLT thread. Not all the songs in those threads are metal, I have actually sat down and read and checked some out. Plus, most of the songs I posted there were not metal. It helped me figure out who sung a song that I have been trying to figure out for a while.
