So why can't we use the other 90 percent? Is it because we are in fact not intelligent enough to learn how? Or because we're not meant to? What if we could use the other parts of our brain? Would the earth be in even more chaos? Think of the possibilities.KrunkMastaX
Actually, we don't all use 10% of are brain. The average is roughly 10%. I submitted to a test I was asked to participate in, and they found out that I use 18% of my brain. Actually, my brain is very erratic. It goes up and down at unpredictable times, but they found out that I could control it volunarily as well. If I make it go up to my capacity, they say my brain goes into "overload" and after that it drops way down to 6% brain activity. They said there are only 50 known cases of this, but they also said that there are probably more that 2,000 people on earth who have this condition.
If we used a higher perecentage perhaps threads such as "my left butt cheek is red" would not exist...NavigatorsGhost
Lol true.

what test is this? and what condition?

And there goes entertainment.

Bull****. I volunteer in a biopsych lab and due to ethical standards we can't keep track of a person's performance in a trial. We have the data but its never linked to the person and we can never tell them how they did. For all intents and purposes, the second they recieve the debrief form they never took part in our study. Also, there's no max your brain activity can be at so its impossible to have a percentage of brain activity. We can see which brain areas are more active than others, but that's about it.
Furthermore, a large part of your brain is dedicated to specialized tasks. The only part that thinks is the frontal cortex. And let me emphasize that that area is only for raw, completely abstract thought. If you ever try to picture something in your head your frontal cortex starts communicating with your occipital lobe to form the visual thought. If you add sound to that then the cortex communicates with the temporal lobe. If you're remembering your tenth birthday then along with all that your hippocampus activates. And lets say that this whole thought process makes you feel good, well now your amygdala is also active. Now lets also add on that this whole memory sequence is somewhat pleasurable as well, now your nucleus accumbens is active. Oh crap your teacher just called on you and caught you daydreaming! Now your medulla is activating your sympathetic nervous system while your pons activate and make you pay attention.
The point of that elaborate example is to show just why the 10% myth is, well, a myth. Your brain is not used exclusively for thinking. Your brain is extremely specialized. If one part is damaged your executive functioning may not be harmed but something is going to suffer. Let's say a stroke destroys your substantia nigra. Now your ability to think wont be harmed in any way but you won't be able to move any part of your body.
To condense this whole post into one sentence: When was the last time you heard a doctor say to someone "Good news! The stroke only destroyed the 80% of your brain that you don't use!"

Bull****
I have been waiting a long time for someone to say that. I wanted to make up a story as ridiculous as the myth itself. You hit the nail on the proverbial head, gamerguy.
You mean that it's always the same 10 % of our brain mass that is activated during each task we can perform? That would be pretty impressive considering all the things we're able to do.
I thought that only small sections (about 10 %) of our brains are activated at a time. That we wouldn't be able to use all the 100 % of our brain mass at the same time, only small sections of it. In theory that way we would have all the capacity on our finger tips. That's the view I've got, but what the hell do I really know...
Using 10% of our brain to me sounds about accurate.
It all depends on what 'using' means?
Compare it to a computer, if you run the CPU too fast too long it blows up. If that happend humans would never have evolved far... So our brain gets around this by not allowing our prains to process at mope than 10%, maybe if you are an individual who uses a larger amount life expectancy may decrease, i dont know?
Or it could be that the brain controlls memorys much like a hard drive and i belive thats where only 10% could be used at once because as an individual i have an infinate number of memorys and experiances but they are not all playing at once, im not ALWAYS thinking about the day i was 4 years ,sitting on a wall, eating a cherry doughnut! Those memories come and go and need to do so to allow other memorys to enter our thoughts.
The bottom line is we use 10% because our body dictates that to itself.
If we were to ever change that there would be consequences good or bad!
If we used a higher perecentage perhaps threads such as "my left butt cheek is red" would not exist...NavigatorsGhostAnd then... the world just wouldn't be worth living :(
