well lets take quotes and analyze them as tokens of each character's wisdom.
sonic:"You're goin' down Robuttnic."
its a very basic pun intended for the lower class audience. And does sonic know that robotnic is going down? does he have a time machine of some sort? the use of slang does not help either.
Mario: "Itsa me, Mario!"
It is simple and true since he is, in fact, Mario. The use of ethnic color to stress his point is reminiscent of greats like Mark Twain.
In short, Mario is the more intelligent character and would easily beat sonic.
