so eating protein and lifting weights go hand in hand, but how? does the protein help build muscle or just make your muscles larger faster. (will it help make a person stronger or will it just make them look bigger?)

Protein help the overall " growth " of muscle. So It really depends on your technique and regime To bulk up you should be looking at about 65 - 75% of you maximun one rep max, and doing 6-8 reps of 3-4 sets and increasing the weight over time

well muscles pretty much need protein to be. get protein shake powder from GMC or your local health store. i got a powder that is 60 grams of protein ( its like a full serving steak) its weigh ( spelling? ) protein. not only does it give you that much protein, buy you'll seriously feel like you jst ate a steak, you'll be very full. and its only like 200 calories so itll make you loose weight by not eating soo much as well. its a great bonus. mine says you should take the shake 30 min after excersize and it sopposedly doubles the efficiency ( as if you did 2x the reps) and it reduces lactic acid buildup, which is lovely. ive actually seen results from it. i dont believe in these stuff, its just not right for me.ive been wieght lifting for about 5 months and im already seeing great results.im losing fat, growing muscle and people tell me im looking great.so i dont see the need for these proteins,shakes...etc.just weight lift 3 times a week,1 hour each, and keep increasing the weights over time, little by little. also follow your coach instructions, this is very important.

Yeah it's a misconception as to how much the "home lifter" really needs. Unless you are a pro builder lifting for 6 hours a day, you don't need nearly the amount of protein some of the equations that tell you how much you need, say. The most used formula told me I needed to much protein that I would have to eat like 10 steaks a day and chase it down with a huge glass of milk to get anywhere close. I've been lifting for years now.

well i heard a lot about how you need to take like 120+ grams of protein a day and work out hard fi you want to get bigger, and i tried it for 2 weeks and saw minimum results, but i guess it is all about sticking to it

If you want to stay natural, seriously just a big glass of milk after a lift gives almost 20g of protein. I drink that after a workout and I feel a lot better afterwords than I did back when I took protein and weight gainers.

If you think it's slow starting out, you aint seen nothing yet. After a while you kind of hit a wall that can take years to see further results without serious routines.

It is easy to get more than the needed protein just from eating right...I do not use any powders, shakes, etc. I weigh 210, low body fat You just have to maintain a proper diet of high protein and low fat foods.

6-8 reps for upper body you need to do more reps for your legs if your bulking since they are much larger then your arms.

The best thing that works for me is whey protein before and after working out (absorbs into your blood stream in 20-30min) and then Casein protein before going to bed since its a slow acting protein it absorbs over several hours and while your sleeping it'll keep feeding your muscles.

I wish that people had to post pics with all of these threads. Some of the advice on them is terrible, some is waaaay out there, and some (very little) is right on. It would be nice to see who actaully knows what they are talking about. Also, some of the "crazy" advice might just be useful...would be good to see pics to back it up.

There hasn't been any crazy advice. Almost everyone has said the same thing. Obviously more protein helps but you don't need some of the crazier numbers to see results. It just depends on how serious you want to take it.

It's really about repairing muscles. When you work out, you're damaging muscle fibre, which the body then rejoins and pads out. Because of this, it's most important to eat protein soon after exercising and carbohydrates, for energy, before.

People often overestimate the amount of protein they need while exercising, and end up putting on fat as well as muscle.

You'll find your own ideal balance after a couple of months at the gym, and remember that heavy cardo-vascular exercise (running etc.) is going to eat into your energy stores quickly and possibly into your muscle. So if you're trying to bulk up, keep cardio to a minimum.

I was not referring to just this thread.
There has not been any crazy advice...YET
But, if you have posted in any of the weight lifting/muscle gaining threads you must have seen some of the stuff I am talking about.

A word of caution on the advice here though:
Too much protein has been linked to kidney problems...(too much protein powder...you can Overdose on anything, even water) http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=50900

But it would still be nice to see wo knows what they are talking about.
-like I said, some advice might seem crazy, but be really good.
-this is just one of those things where pics are needed for proof

You want to keep CERTAIN cardio to a minimum...but NOT ALL -train like a sprinter, not a marathon runner = use interval trainning -just look at what those 2 types of athletes look like for proof

Protein and amino acids (which make up protein)are the building blocksand are responsible for the repair and maintenance of lots of body tissue, including muscle.

So that's why it's important.

Protein powders aren't necessary but they can be quite convinient.

It's whey protein and it's great stuff but taste wise takes some getting used to, especially mixed with water.

Protein doesn't make your muscles bigger. What it does is cut down the recovery time between workouts, thus allowing you to work out more often resulting in greater muscle growth. If you want to make your muscles bigger invest in some protein mix. You just can't get enough protein from foods ~ especially if you're a college student like me.

You can get plenty of protein from regular foods...you just have to know where to look...this is what I do Example: Honeysuckle ground turkey meat 97% fat free = 26 grams of protein per serving and only 3.5 grams of fat (2 servings is one meal for me = 52 grams protein, only 7 grams of fat) -normal fat consumption is 60 - 65 grams per day...I keep mine under 30 and eat tons of protein...very easy to do, if you know what you are doing -and no supplements
