In medieval times, castle stairways were always built clockwise. This was because when the enemy knights were trying to storm the castle, they couldn't use their right hands to use their swords. This gave the defending forces an advantage. On another note, this is because knights were always right handed, since left handed people were thought to be born of the devil.

I also knew that the windows were narrow, but got wider on the inside. This meant it was easy to fire arrows out the windows, but made it difficult for arrows to be fired in. Another defense strategy! :P
