Edward Norton will not be reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for The Avengers.

Marvel Studios sent a statement to HitFix confirming their earlier scoop that Norton will not be back for The Avengers. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige informed the site: "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert [Downey], Chris [Hemsworth], Chris (Evans), Sam [Jackson], Scarlett [Johansson], and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks."

Personally I think this really sucks. Norton is a fantastic actor and they should have been thanking their lucky stars they could get him at all to play i a comic book movie, and instead they pass up on getting him back.

thoughts?

I hate when different actors play the role in sequals (with a few exceptions).

This.

Plus, if this has anything to do with him not wanting to play second-fiddle and demanding a more prominent role, then the movie is probably better off without him.

In any case, I'm sure they'll get a good actor to replace him, and I'm sure that Norton will have no problem getting great roles in the future.

I can't imagine that, in an ensemble film, the human form of the Hulk would have gotten a lot of screen time, so I can't say I care that much. Given how difficult he seemed to be to work with on the Hulk movie, though, I can understand the decision

Yep.

And if they're gonna have to make all kinds of concessions to him in order to keep him, then it's better off to just get rid of the guy and find someone else.

I don't know exactly what kinds of problems they are talking about. But if him being a "problem" is the case, hopefully Norton works that out sooner than later. I'm betting that there have been more than a few talented actors who ruined their careers because of them either being a "problem" or difficult to deal with.

In all fairness, I'd like to hear his side of things before I make any judgements about him.

But yeah...it sounds like he was just being a ****.

If memory serves, he pitched some sort of fit over the editing of the Hulk film and didn't do any publicity for the movie until extremely close to release when some sort of sop was given to him

He does that all the time. I know of at least two films (American History X and Down in the Valley) where he took control away from the director and re-cut the films himself.

I can't recall specifics, but I seem to recall some sort of concession was made to get him to do things like talk about the movie and show up at the premiere

I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of the film industry. But if I were directing a movie and one of the actors tried to do that **** to me, I wager that I'd probably see that as a HUGE ****ing problem.

Is that kind of behavior standard in the film industry? I'm betting not.

And if that's the case, and if Edward Norton has a habit of doing that kind of ****, then I completely understand the decision to tell him to go get bent.

Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors but I'll be pissed if he lost himself this role cause he decided to be a ****. I'm sure the man has a pretty good sized ego, but lets hope it's not that bad. Still though, as others have already stated, this just frees him up to make better movies.

No, it isn't common for actors to do that, though it is pretty common for the film to be re-cut after the Director has finished his cut of the film. But usually it is the Producer or Studio who demands it.

In the case of those two films I mentioned, both were independent films, so Edward Norton was probably the biggest name involved in the production and could get away with demanding Final Cut.

But it sounds like he demanded a lot of creative control over The Incredible Hulk, including re-writing the script himself: http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/06/14/the-truth-about-edward-norton-vs-marvel/

Knowing that, I am shocked that they didn't replace him on the first movie. These superhero films are incredibly expensive and tightly controlled commodities. The Studio is always going to maintain final control over the project.

It's just strange that if Edward Norton wants so much creative control over his projects, why isn't he Directing or Writing more of his own material? I guess it's easier to re-work other peoples' creative material.

More news.

Norton's Rep:

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light," the rep told the site. "Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers.' He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at [Comic-Con] and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with [director] Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast."

"Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith," he told Hitfix. "This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings... We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans."

It would be pretty cool if they go back and forth between Eric Bana and Edward Norton for each Hulk movie. Great idea in fact!

For the studio, yes. For anyone else, no. He fought with them to keep additional footage in the last Hulk movie that would have further fleshed out the story.

Holy ****, my respect for Edward Norton just nosedived. What a ****. Actors walking into the editing room and trying to do someone else's job, is something someone like Steven Seagal would (and actually has) do.

Besides, it's not like I will miss him, his performance in The Incredible Hulk was completely forgettable (even Eric Bana was better), and the movie itself sucked. The Hulk is a character that works better on the pages of a comic book, than it does in a live action movie.
