As if it wasn't enough with asteroids, gamma ray bursts, nuclear war, etc. threatening to doom the earth. Now we have to worry about the robot revolution. Just watch this video and you'll see what I'm talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBcnX1Ww

Why Boston Dynamics, WHY!!!! You have doomed us all!

No, were still good.As long as they dont develop a.i. that can allow a robot to become sentient and aware of itself.

I bet that's their next project. If they can make a robot balance itself out after getting the 300 pit of death kick then they sure as hell can make A.I. for that thing.

For some reason this thread gave me an idea for a commercial:

"So hello to our robotic Overlords!" For robotic Zerg Overlord toys.

Wow, that was really pretty impressive. The way that thing handles different kind of terrain, and especially the way it recovers from stumbling is pretty amazing.

When that guy kicked it, I was sure it was gonna fall on its ass. Same thing with the ice. The way it kept from falling down as it was slipping on the ice was REALLY impressive.

Taken from the "The Second Renaissance" perspective, as long as we don't enslave artificially intelligent beings, they won't have the desire to overthrow and destroy the human race. Of course, it could all end up being "CRUSH KILL DESTROY" but I wouldn't consider those to be intelligent machines (the term robot infers slavery, which we want to avoid).

As for the video... we are getting REALLY close to the "wall" in terms of intelligence. Once we put the foundations down (walking, running, jumping, etc.) there will be a flood of new developments that happen so fast that we won't know what hit us.

I myself cannot wait. The prospect of becoming emotionally attached to an artificially intelligent machine is fascinating.

It will develop in a way that is similar to all the science-fiction that surrounds robots and artificially intelligent machines. Just not in any specific weighting towards one or the other... just a unique set of circumstances that develop out of older ones... >_>

I myself cannot wait until there are cases of people actually being literally "robosexuals" and there being arguments and debates about rights of AI machines and whether or not they deserve the same rights as humans. The next hundred years are probably going to be the most interesting point in human history... easily.

Why worry about them taking over when we can program them to do anything we want and nothing else?

yea it is kinda sad looking at it that way, but hey at least they won't be cold when they're cleaning up at McDonalds hired as janitors. I wouldn't be surprised if a whole new industry boomed from this DARPA funded project.

Maybe I don't have the best insight, but wouldn't we be able to solve the problem before it starts, by not making them smart enough to become self aware? I mean, we build robots for certain tasks. They do those tasks and nothing more, without complaning. I know it sounds cruel, but if we don't allow them to become smarter, one less problem off the list, right?

Artificially intelligent machines are programed to think for themselves and are not bound by pre-programmed outlines. They learn just like a child would and develop a sense of reality just like a human does. Enslaving one of them would be like enslaving a human being.

But of course, robots like those used in vehicle manufacturing that are programed for a definitive task and nothing else and don't fall into the artificially intelligent category and can be called robots and be "enslaved."

If I may be so bold (humour me). Why did God give us free will (assuming God exists and created us)? Why did he allow us to think for ourselves and do what we wanted? In a sense, with the beginnings in artificial intelligence (a newly burgeoning field), we have literally become God. We have become the creator of new life. It is not biological but it is could be considered "alive" in the sense that it can think for itself and learn like we as humans can. Instead of a bunch of electrical signals passing between biological neurons, it is a bunch of electrical signals passing between a bunch of silicon transistors.

This is going to be the biggest rights issue when it comes up since the time of slavery.

Interesting. Hopefully we don't put the AI ones in charge of the military.
