@nathanbats: We do have a sticky for Anime Recommendation outside of OT but however, just to save you the trouble reading those old posts, I'll just throw in my favorite animes that I think you might enjoy:

  • Kill la Kill
  • Tokyo Ghoul
  • Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (if you like more Gundam animes, feel free to ask me more cause Gundam animes are totally awesome but few)
  • Code Geass
  • Future Diary
  • Outlaw Star
  • Viewtiful Joe Anime series
  • Inuyasha

Edit:

  • Death Note
  • Deadman Wonderland

Gundam 0083 is the next Gundam I plan to watch after finishing Gundam ZZ (near the end now) and then Char's Counterattack. My favourite Gundam shows so far are Zeta Gundam and Gundam 00.

I prefer to watch the older Gundam anime series mainly because I like the Earth Federation vs Zeon conflict more so and Gundam 0083 from The 08th MS Team to Stardust Memory are the best Gundam series and still holds well to this day. Char's Counterattack is also a great film and Char's final film as well. Also just want to throw this out, Gundam Unicorn also continues Char's legacy should you find the time to watch it but I recommend just reading the Manga then watching the Anime but the Anime is okay, just doesn't go much into details then the Manga.

Your welcome. Hope you find them interesting. I didn't want to include other Animes like Naruto, One Piece, or Bleach for that matter due to Shonen Jump animes are longer and tend to follow DBZ formula.

Also checks these other Animes I forgot to mention:

  • Death Note
  • Deadman Wonderland

My introduction to Gundam was through the alternate-universe shows, with Gundam Wing & Endless Waltz, then Turn A Gundam, and then Gundam Seed & Destiny. It was only after Gundam 00 that I went back to watch the older series, starting with the original Gundam, then Zeta Gundam, and now I'm near the end of Gundam ZZ. Looking forward to Char's Counterattack next, and then 0083 and 08th MS Team.

  • Ghost in the Shell - everything from the Ghost in the Shell movies, the two seasons of Stand Alone Complex and the Solid State Society movie ties into that series, then there's the tetralogy that's the Arise series, and I think they made a movie semi-recently that ties into that.
  • Cowboy Bebop - there's just the one 26 episode season, and a movie that's of no consequence, but this is a classic that shouldn't be passed up on.
  • Samurai Champloo - if you love Cowboy Bebop, this is a must.
  • Afro Samurai - this is more a miniseries, but it was pretty cool. They made a movie to follow up on the series, Ressurection, I didn't care for that much but I love the original miniseries.
  • Akira - from what I've heard, this is pretty much the movie that really opened up anime as a genre to the west in a big way, and it's really fucking good. If you haven't seen it, then that's a must.

And the English localization for all these are pretty good. Being how I grew up on Akira's 1989 English dubbing I'm glad they included it in the 25th Anniversary Edition.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Legend of Galactic Heroes

One Punch Man

Hellsing Ultimate

Death Note

Code Geass

Cowboy Bebop

Berserk 1997 (Ignore episode 1 though)

Tokyo Ghoul is a very strong recommendation if you liked Attack on Titan.

She is 17. Personally, I was too busy noticing the edge than to think of anything else. Not saying that the edge in this case was a bad thing, Kill la Kill made the edginess work.

Dragon Ball Super had a poor start, rehashing the movies, but it has improved significantly.

Animation still abit crap unfortunately.

The only part Dragon Ball was good was the first season.

After that it was so badly paced it was difficult to stay awake. The episodic formula did the series good. Hard to stay invested in a fight which lasts for over an hour.

You appear thinking of Z. It had 3 (or 4 if you count GT) series.

The original series had barely any fighting, it was more of an adventure comedy. Z had multiple versions, including cut versions that removed entire arcs and Super is very much condensed with fights taking up a small proportion.

While Z dragged fights out to level bordering art form, in certain regards, Super is too brisk.

The other thing to take into account is that it was VHS era, you wouldn't be sitting for an hour, it would be 15-20 minute chunks, then waiting a week.

The original Also had serious pacing issues with around 10 episodes in one bloody tower, Red Ribbon Saga was bad, but it only got worse from there. Then there were the tournaments, of which the original series had 3 of.

I just don't get the Kill La Kill hype. I saw the first couple of episodes, and just didn't see what's so good about it. I loved Gurren Lagann (a much better show from the same creator), but just can't get into Kill La Kill.

My favourite Dragon Ball saga was the Cell Saga. And then the entire Dragon Ball franchise just took a nosedive after that.

Peak for me was Namek/Frieza. Like Sergio Leon on crack. It is literally the Good, The Bad and The Ugly with martial arts demigods. Really hated as well how Super Saiyan went from this built up legend, to something kids use.

Although the one thing I do like in the Buu Saga is that Mr Satan saves the world.
