The Ring and The Grudge are pretty creepy if you don't think Japanese horror is lame. As for western ones I haven't really got anything newer that doesn't focous mainly on torture.
I'm pretty immune to Japanese horror (or any horror for that matter). But you might want to try 'Audition' if it's not scary it's at least a very good film.

I actually read about that. It sounded too creepy for me, so I passed.
Audition is more of a shocker than scary. I think THE OTHERS was probably the last movie that put a pretty good scare into me. SIXTH SENSE was pretty scary too. Those are both kind of old now.
1408 was pretty random. it was pretty good. i think it did well because of samuel l jackson in it lol. Audition was pretty good. ^ ^ i love takashi miike. this film inspired hostel...

I saw that one. The ending was a bit poor to be honest, but it was an overall good movie. Not a 'horror' movie - I would classify it as a psychological thriller to be honest.
I rente Malevolence yesterday. Fair to poor acting but VERY creepy film in it's way. One reviewer quoted in one of the trailers that were on the special features sort of put it best. He said something like "a return to classic 80's horror/gore without the humor". Worth renting for sure, if it's not too late.
