You kinda answered your own question didnt you?? lol
Anyway, i think you should consult your doctor about this if it has been continuing a lot. It can usually be caused by certain events that have affected you, or even medication you have been taking. I cant really pin point it from here. But it is something which should be kept a watch on if it continues.
I am a lifelong insomniac as well. Insomnia is not that you go to bed late. You just do not sleep, or you sleep very little. Or if you sleep, no matter how long you sleep, you wake up exhausted. It sucks hard-core. Worse than any hangover or drug effect. What do I do?
Breathe slowly, not just the normal in/out stuff, but breathe slowly, or hold your breath on the in and out. Wait until it is uncomfortable, I'm not talking about until you turn blue. But slow your breathing down, or hold your breath slightly until your breathing is normal. It will clear your mind, and it will produce sleep.
If it does not work at first, get up and read or game for awhile, and try again.
I've gone through bouts of insomnia at least once a year. Mostly I know when its coming because I hardly get a wink of sleep no matter how much I try to relax or make my surroundings calm/soothing. Once I do get some sleep though I'm still tired as hell so it's a crap shoot. Usually I try to let it pass and it goes away within at least a week (that's the most I can tolerate it) but if it goes past that, I go for the sleeping pills as a last resort -- but I make sure I use the correct amount and not abuse it.
If it's really bugging you though and if you think it's an extreme case, then I suggest seeing a doctor about it before trying to handle things yourself.
