And do you have it already? If not is the option actually available in the world of computers?

I think we may have actually got to a point where there is such a wide variety of laptops on the market, that if you look for it you can find one that suits your needs completely. Am I right or is there still more that people are looking forward too or want out of this market?

There's pretty much a laptop out there for everyone anymore. From netbooks to gaming laptops and everything in between. Mac? Linux? You can get those too! You say you want a touch screen and no keyboard? We call 'em tablets, and they exist too.

I'd check out the Republic of Gamers laptops from Asus. They're probably one of the best choices for the price.

these types of laptops have always confused me on something. When you close the laptop isn't most of the screen unprotected? I have yet to see these in person so I can never tell for certain whether this is the case.

I have a $600 laptop that I bought for college use that has somehow become my full-time machine even though I have a perfectly fine desktop hooked up. I guess it's just the convenience of having everything in one place.

I've never seen one in person, but I'd imagine there's a flexible hinge attached to the screen that lets you put it back where it would normally be before closing it. That's just a guess anyway.

For $600? I wish. I've never seen a true gaming laptop for anywhere near $600.

So I guess we are still looking for reduced prices, but aren't we always. Still though it shouldn't cost nearly a grand or more to get a gaming laptop.

Unfortunately you'll pretty rarely see "budget" and "gaming computer" in the same sentence unless it's one of two things: 1. "There is no such thing as a budget gaming computer." 2. "How to build a budget gaming computer." OEMs will never hop on that when they can get ridiculous profit margins on gaming machines.

  1. Gaming =/= laptops EXCEPT with high end, "desktop replacements" (BTW, gaming isn't defined by Facebook Farm App, it's DragonAge and Call of Duty type stuff, the rest is just entertainment)
  2. Desktop "gaming" machines are rarely as good pre-built vs. DIY
  3. If your gonna get a laptop, try to get one with Nvidia's new Optimus tech, it'll provide moderate gaming power and keep a decent battery life.
  4. Best mix, IMHO, is a gaming rig, and everyday laptop with integrated/weak graphics, and a good netbook for mobility.
  5. Disclaimer: I do NOT know what I am talking about, any advice taken should be accompanied with a grain of salt and/or Mrs. Dash.

Thank you. Goodbye.

i had a Dell tower before, top of the range years ago. half the spec of this laptop, 1gb ram windows xp 160GB HDD and a slower processor and it performed so much better than this laptop

Decent price, around 14" screen, light weight and decent battery. I'd want a decent processor too and I don't really care about the graphics card. I'd also just put Ubuntu on the HDD, without a windows partition.

This. Power AND portability. If I want a 27" monitor, I'll use a desktop. Laptops shouldn't weigh more than 10 pounds.

My minimum wants for a laptop would be an Intel Core processor (or whatever the AMD equivalent is), 4GB of RAM, and a 15" screen.

I wouldn't use it for anything especially demanding, mostly it would be used for doing some things without having to be antisocial and go sit at my desk in my room, but also maybe the occasional bit of sound and music work.

I certainly wouldn't use it for gaming, I use my desktop for that.

I have the exact same laptop that Foxhound posted. It's got everything that I was looking for in a laptop. 1)It's small enough to take anywhere 2)It can play all the latest games and 3) you can get one for under $1000.

Something that is small and easy to carry around, good battery life, and has enough power to play most of the new games out there. I ended up buying the Alienware M11x, fits all my needs, I bring it around with me everywhere on campus, great purchase for me.

My main factors are battery life and price.

I bought a 160GB Samsung NC10 for £200 and got a 9-cell battery for £30 which lets me use my Netbook for around 8-10 hours depending on what I'm doing. It's pretty swift despite having just an Atom processor (which is split to act as a dual core) and 1gb ram (can upgrade to 2gb). It runs Red Alert 2 and UT so I'm happy with it.

In the future I'd like Laptops to have prices similar to the equivalent Desktop though.

I just picked up a Lenovo IdeaPad Y460. I didn't want a 15.6" laptop as I feel that they are a little too big to be lugging around. The 14" screen is a good compromise. Battery power is decent. It has switchable graphics between an onboard Intel chip and a Radeon Mobility 5650 1GB. I also got a Core i5 processor and 4GB RAM. I think the total with shipping and taxes was $738. Pretty good deal if you ask me. The biggest thing for me was to futureproof the laptop as much as possible since upgrading a laptop is much harder than a desktop.

my perfect laptop would be like a desktop where i could choose and build it myself using off the shelf parts. sadly that laptop does not yet exist so ill stick with my desktop for high end gaming. if i was to buy a laptop today though then id like about 6-8GB of ram, a quad or 6 core processor and a low-mid range GPU (if it could play the likes of guild wars or LOTRO nicely then id be happy). the screen wouldnt need to be 1080....1050 would be fine and would probably be more suitable for the GPU (as long as its a good 1050 screen). an SSD would also be nice....150GB or so would be fine. the reason i want that kind of processing umph is for VMs. i like to play around with various linux disrtos and VMs make that much more convenient. the more resources i can throw at a VM the better :).

In my opinion, prices, battery life and also portability/ weight of a laptop is the factor of some people tried to choose some of the laptops with carefully before buying it. As a student, portability is the main factor which they doesn't feel too heavy to carry these laptops even they carried it for a long time. I'm don't care about the laptop performance even my laptop can able to play some latest games (even with some lags), but choosing the slim and portable laptop is my best option to have it.
