Now, before you call me a religious zealot that has lost touch with reality or brainwashed by Christians, you must realize that I tried looking at this at subjective way on the topic of Stem cell research.
Now, I heard there is news that Embryonic stem cell research can be no longer necessary when three separate groups of researchers showed recently that normal skin cells can be reprogrammed to an embryonic state in mice. It is very likely that the technique can be used with human cells. The fact that these cells were pluripotent was proved by producing fetuses derived entirely from these transformed skin cells.
So Can Stem cells cure Alzheimer's disease? I and type II diabetes? Parkinson's disease? That many believe thought possible through stem cells? I've done some research, and I have found out that none of the diseases above cannot be cured with the use of Stem cell research. This is one more incentive of how Stem cell is unnecessary in people who are against Stem cell research. However, that does make Stem cell research useless? My answer is no,for they are still many benefits and advantages that Stem cells can still do for mankind.
However, the question is whotruly gets these treatments first? At a cost of $1,000-$2,000 just to produce each human egg, therapeutic cloning would easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, for each patient. Therefore, these kinds of therapies would only be available to the wealthy, assuming the problems of early development will eventually be eliminated. (Tough luck for us average Joes:()
Now, I ask you, what are your thoughts on this topic? You can answer with scientific principles, morality reasons or personal reasons. Just make sure you back them up. You can argue that this is just a game forum and will not settle anything on the Stem cell research issue as a whole, but who knows? Maybe you'll learn something from this, may be your views will change or maybe it will strengthen your resolve.
