obesity is caused by the Body Mass Index, because they made up the word.
They actually consider Shaq obese, i want to see other 340 pound guys do wht he does.Â
You know waht really causes obesity? Sitting on your ass eating cheetos while playing videogames :oNifty_Shark
 O RLY?
Too much McDonalds.
Â
Less whining, more excersize fatasses.Â
PoisonPorkchop
Exactly what I was gonna say. I know a guy that almost died from McDonalds so I went and started being mean to Ronald MacDonald mascot guy just for fun.
Eating the wrong things, and not exercising enough.
It's only genetic in the extreme minority of cases, if it was not, countrys in Europe would be suffering the same problems, but they don't only the U.S. does.Â
obeasity being genetic is the biggest cop out ever, sure some morbidly obese probably have a genetic condition but for the other 90% they are just fat asses, people are so lazy and consume way more than the 2000 to 2500 calorie limit and then they wonder why it their ass wont fit into the seats at the movies. i feel that obesity being genetic is in most cases just laughable and a good reflection on the fat people themselves, ie. always making excuses for why they are fat and using it as a justification to have bacon thick burger from hardees for lunch and then hitting up dairy queen on the way homeg-unit248agree..even if it is gentics (which it can be) people should do more for there own health
IT is everything and nothing. It's what you want it to be, and nothing else.
People are what they believe they are. Whether this strange term of genetics means anything, I cannot possibly know.Â
saying its all genetic is bs because if that were the case, the level of obesity would generally stay stable.... imo its like 15% genetic 85% behavioural..
Â
The genetic basis for obesity seems that some people find it easier to put on weight or harder to loose it, that however isn't a reason for obesity in and of itself. Some people also have (is it a gene?) 1 or two copies of a gene that makes them more inclined to carry around extra weight (especially if you have 2 of them), for these people weight loss is pretty much impossible, the best they can do is avoid weight gain.Â
There are also some rare unavoidable obesity cases, but most can be overcome, it's just that genetic makeup makes it really hard for some people and really easy for others.Â

This article was posted on BBC news the other day which I thought made quite an interesting read.
I am however of the opinion that a lot of the obese population just have a combination of a bad diet and lack of exercise. A low metabolism doesn't help either.

lol even people with "bad genetics" only average another 6.5 pounds over people with "good genetics."
It's not genetic at all....the people who think it is really needs to learn biology properly...
Fat is food deposits your body creates when the food you eat isnt burned away , these food deposits are used up when your body needs the food/fat this is so humans could survive if their tribe had a rough period.
Now if obesity was genetic, that would mean that you never ever needed to eat food, since your body "creates" it from nothing because it's "in the genes".

Thats not neccesarly true, some body or more prone to storing carbs for instance then others. For instance one of my regulars that come into work can not eat much carbs or he will start gaining wieght rapidly regardless that he works out.

Dude, 6.5lbs is 3kg, like it said in the article. 3kg is not exactly incredibly light.
People just eat crap and are lazy and don't care. In the future we gonna have no army because people are gonna be too fat and lazy to do anything.
I mean, how hard is it to lift some weights do some sit ups and excersize the rest of your body. I do it every day and I eat healthy foods. I'm good.
And also, I mean they have Sooooooooooooo many advertisements to lose weight. Pills and stuff. Try those. Or are they too lazy to take a pill too. Thay can eat a cake but not a tablet.

yes it's true that some burn food and fat slower than normal people, but can you agree with me that obesity itself isnt in the genes?;)
Obesity is multifactorial. The bottom line is that fat is created when you burn less calories then you take in. Anything causing you to burn less calories or take in more calories leads to weight gain.
Behavioral:
Diet (intake)
Excercise (expenditure)
Genetic:
Metabolism (how efficient your body is in processing food, storing calories, and number of calories you expend at your basal rate)
Â
There are some genetic factors that influence diet as well as some people have more "addictive" personalities and may become hooked on sweets or other foods.
Â
It depends on the person. Sometimes it can be genetic...but in the case of someone with a thyroid problem. ...If your thyroid is out of wack, it can cause you to either be ultra skinny and not GAIN weight, or can cause you to be obese and not be able to lose weight, and gain it instead...no matter what you eat.
Also, other health problems may occur that causes weight gain. My father has been very ill since he was 23. He has two different blood diseases. You may be able to say that due to his illness, he really cant exercise, so its the lack of exercise that is causing his obesity. But he would exercise more if he could, but when you feel as bad as he does, chances are even if your highly motivated, you would be torturing yourself.
With some cases, however, I can easily say its too much Micky D's and the wrong diet and lack of exercise.
