My first semester of college ended today, I was left with a 3.78. I think I'm pretty content with it but I'm a little disappointed I couldn't get it quite where I wanted it. I'd say a good cutoff would be a 3.8 or so, but that's just my opinion.

The only reason I'm a bit upset was because I was really close--had I gottan 4 more questions right on my nutrition exam this morning I'd be at a 3.89.

What do you think is a good GPA for high school, college or whatever?

EDIT: Since so many have asked, I'm a biology major. The reason I bring this up is because I hope to attend med school after graduation. So GPA is a big deal, unfortunately.

Depends on how difficult your school is and what you're majoring in... but above 3.0 and you'll probably be fine for whatever you want to do.

Above 3.5 is a solid GPA depending on what your major is.

I'm a junior in college and my goal is always around 3.5. That's because I want to go to law school after I get my bachelor's and I need to be somewhat competitive.

3.2 or higher is usually what school requires. It doesn't matter how your GPA is because it rarely matters in real world.magicalclick
It certainly does if you want a job involving heavy science or engineering. I got a 3.9 in high school, while none of my close friends had above a 3, so obviously people's standards of what is "good" will be different. I was always disapointed that I never crossed that holy 4.0 threshold.

It doesn't matter passed the first job though.

probably a 3.0 or above considering many co-op employers require a 3.0 or higher.

We had the CEO from Monster come to our college freshman year and he really stressed how important getting a 3.0 was. He pretty much said what you posted, that they won't even look at your application unless it's at least 3.0. So going by that I say anything above a 3.0 is good

Depends on your major. For Computer Science at my school anything above a 2.5 is great. The major is mostly about resume building and employers know that. Plus the school is overhauling their engineering and compsci department and testing the difficulty of classes.

If you're a business major or a pseudoscience major having >3.0 is fine.

For college, I'm not happy unless I maintain at least a 3.7. In my senior year and trying to push back above a 3.8 (around a 3.78 atm).

I'd say a 3.3. That's the average to get into colleges in my area.

I'd say 3.5 and up is great. I just checked my final grades last week and it looks like my GPA was a 3.9 this semester and I'm actually unhappy with that because the grade that brought it down was an A- in writing even though my final grade in that class was a 99% according to my professor on the last day of the semester.

That's pretty good. That was my final GPA in law school. Like you, I was a little disappointed because I needed a 3.8 or above to graduate summa cum laude (with highest honors). Instead I graduated magna cum laude (with high honors), which is still better than plain cum laude (with honors). Anyway. Only one student in my entire class of (originally) over 300 people earned a summa cum laude. If your school follows a similar curve, a 3.78 is still very good.

In some ways, yes, but not if you want to go to grad school like the TC. Then your GPA matters quite a bit.

Grade Point Average. It's used to determine your overall performance in school. 4.0 is the highest, unless you have differently weighted classes.

College - Anything above a 3.5 LOL

Pre-med/ law school - The highest you can possibly get.

Depends entirely on the difficulty of the school you attend. But you should definitely shoot for a 3.0 minimum regardless of your major or where you go to school.
