Look at the situation that's been going on in Thailand (something like 95% Buddhist) over the last few years for example.
As i said, relative terms, there are very very few instances in Buddhist history of violence, compared to the many in other religions.
Plus weren't they riots that ended in a few deaths?
Riots, military coups, in a nutshell the country has been on the brink of a civil war for several years. In another example the Dalai Lama himself, supposedly the very embodiment of peace, advocated armed conflict against China. It was only after he realized that his people could not win a war against China without western help, and that western help wasn't going to come, that he began to advocate a diplomatic solution.
