I think the Starcraft universe has a pretty realistic depiction of the future. It takes place in 2500 AD and I think the technology is accurate for that time. There's faster than light travel and colonies and many planets, but people still act the way they do now. Also, guns are still ballistic and things are made of steel and not made of some fancy new alloy.

This instantly negates all claims of realism.

Do you think people in the year 1500 believed that we could walk on the moon, or communicate instantaneously across the planet?

There's a difference between a) accomplishing what was once unimaginable, and b) violating the laws of physics.

I'd say Futurama is a realistic depiction, keeping in mind that it takes place 1000 years in the future, more than enough time to create a death Santa and a talking monkey.

Violating the laws of physics is thought to be unimaginable. But don't get me wrong, I still think travel at that speed is impossible :P

Yeah, but this section of Physics is contradicting. As far as our current knowledge of Physics is concerned, matter can neither be created nor destroyed, yet it is here. How is it here? Did it just appear? Well, that would suggest that there is a god now wouldn't it and that doesn't bode well with the scientific community. This contradicting scenario shows that even the scientific community is uncertain of this area. After all, science is just our understanding of the universe. In 2002, at the Université de Moncton, physicist Alain Haché made history by sending pulses at a group velocity of three times light speed over a long distance for the first time, transmitted through a 120-metre cable made from a coaxial photonic crystal. So, as you can see, such a thing is feasable and has already been achieved.

Didn't that show take place in 2000 or something?

"Though no dates are ever specified, The Jetsons was originally supposed to take place in the year 2062.[1]Jetsons: The Movie contradicts this by placing the series "at the turn of the 21st century". In the movie The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones, Elroy wanted to time travel into the future to visit the 25th century, indicating the Jetsons live no later than the 24th century.".

Gotta love Wikipedia

Running man, where men named Arnold will lead resistance groups against the mass media, and old ladies will enjoy men getting chopped into little pieces by a man named buzzsaw in the thunderdome until another man named Mel will come in his modified Australian speedster car transporting a truck of gas but that tank of gas is really sand.

Ghost in the Shell like someone said above. Though the whole brainstem in a robot thing might be a bit farfetched.

Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) seems kind of plausible to me.

on a darker note: the Fallout series.

Except for the ending. I think humanity will survive, except if humans make too much crazy experiments too fast.

Well you have many that could realistically occur. For instance;

Brave New World

Warhammer 40K

Fallout

Blade Runner

Ghost in the Shell

Mad Max

Children of Men

et al

My college Chem professor had an interesting hypothesis about supernovas. It went something like this, imagine if even 10% of all supernovas were caused by a species that created a high level of technology beyond ours but couldn't control it. Definately worrisome when you consider there are people that want to drill to the core of the Earth and drop a nuke, isn't it?

I just took the ones I'm familar with and I think:

BNW: Eh, I don't see one nation arbitrarily (sp?) going on a war of conquest and if anyone takes over, it'll probably be in the West with far superior technology of war. Also, even if they did, I don't think it'd be all communal and pleasure above all. Plus, wasn't it hinted that Russia took over? (The Russian technique for infecting water was particularly ingenius). You have to remember that in the 30s we didn't know they were incompetant. Still a good book.

Fallout: I don't see a nuclear war mainly because of a) MAD (which is the premise of the game, but I believe people have SOME common sense) and b) Western missile shield technology improving. Never played it though

Children of Men: Never seen it, but I'm pretty sure pollution won't get that bad and women won't be sterile. Not a bad premise though.

either Mass Effect or Star Trek, in both it shows humans relying on alien technology in order to explore the galaxy which makes sense to me cause i dont think the human intelligence is strong enought, yet, to make something to take us across the galaxy
