What do you think modern day Hip-Hop should sound like?

Modern day hip-hop needs to demonstrate mastery of bass manipulation, which is indisputable. In my opinion though, I really like to hear old-school gansgter beats, using instruments/samples for the beat, not just synthesized notes. It gives it a more organic tone, and adds an extra layer to the music that a computer-generated sound cannot.

What say you?

It should sound like hip hop from the 80s and 90s, back when it was good.

It should sound like whatever the artists in question choose it to sound like.

all i want it to sound like is what the artist is going through or telling me a story or something that has meaning, which is why i just listen to underground rap or the few mainstream rappers that do it, kid cudi, kanye, eminem, etc

I wish hip-hop was back to when there's no talk of b****** and hoes, money, drugs, sex and cars, or go to party getting drunk. Like Kool Moe Dee, KRS One, Public Enemy etc, most of their song don't have any of the above elements I mentioned.

I really like what artists like Cannibus, Atmosphere and Aesop Rock are doing to broaden the horizons of hip-hop. Even rappers like Busdriver bring alot of fresh ideas to the table. I like to see that. I would like hip-hop to have a much broader voice instead of rappers rapping about the same tired concepts. That's not to say that classic styles are not appreciated. Jurassic 5 does alot of things to stay true to classic hip-hop structure while incorporating new school lyrical stylings. My biggest complaint with hip-hop these days is that MCs aren't as flexible as they need to be, lyrically. I work at a night club so I hear much more bad hip-hop than I really care to. There's nothing worse than hearing the perfect beat with sloppy, forced, grinding rhyme that aren't clever and are totally predictable. ,,,Or maybe I'm just asking too much of entertainers???
