He is probably the most famous Hollywood director of the modern era.

He has made some great films like Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Schindlers List, etc.

I just can't help but feel the guy though is becoming too self-indulgent and repetitive with things.

His patriotism and flag waving for one, but also the repetition of his theme of the forgotten child. Apparently he was autistic as a child and that is why many - nearly all of- his films feature a lost child of some sort.

I'm just getting a bit sick of it! His next project is "Lincoln" about Honest Abe.

EDIT: The Terminal was just that - terminal...

He's a very talented director, there's no doubt about that. I think his most underrated film is Minority Report. His best film is probably Jaws if you ask me.

very good director, a lot of diversity in his work, I mean he go from Jaws ( a man eating shark) to Close Encounters (aliens) to Indiana Jones (adventure/action film) to Jurassic Park ( visual dinosaur flick) to Schindler's List ( a gripping look at the holocaust) to Saving Private Ryan ( an action/drama war film) to Minority Report (a great sci fi film) and all other sorts of films and they are usually very good. The guy has some talent.

I have never LOVED one of his movies. I think theyre entertaining... Indian Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark is really good. But I dont find anything he made to be as great as its cracked up to be. I though Saving Private Ryan and Minority Report were garbage.... and A.I.... and E.T.

He is very good at making movies that enjoy a lot of hype for a while, but that nobody cares about later. His movies seem to mostly get attention for special effects achievements, something that is increasingly irrelevant these days. Personally, I think most of his movies are rather dull.

Probably the two that are considered his best movies diverge from his usual style. Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan (neither of which I have actually seen) aren't really "good" for being entertaining so much as they are for being an ostensibly realistic portrayal of something disturbing.

I think I have to agree with the OP about Spielburg being rather self-indulgent.

Probably up there with the best of all time. Although most of his movies are "big budget", he manages to add a level of depth, realism, and imagination that is unparalled. Without him, the movie industry would not be nearly as signifigant as it is...

I applaud you Steven.

Other than the fact that I think he's taken his whole anti-gun stance too far (digitally editing them out of ET?), I believe him to be a great director.

Amazing director, I didn't see the great things that guy was capable of until I watched A.I. The whole theme of that movie is just fantastic, I particularly like the side characters, Gigolo Joe and Teddy, they're quite memorable. The way all off these characters interacted was just so neat.

That guy is one of my icons, and his resume speaks for itself.

His movies, his connections in hollywood, not only in filmmaking but also in producing, cartons -amblin- tiny toons? pinky and brain? anamaniacs? then went off to get Dreamworks, which put out American Beauty (best pic), Gladiator (best pic), and of course Shrek. Though he didn't do those things single handed, he has powerful friends, frank marhall and kathleen kennedy, and jeffrey katzenberg, and david geffen.

now he is dipping his hand more so into producing/executive producing, memoirs of a geisha and transformer for example.

his tv work, band of brothers and taken

video games now. so he is not being as creative as he once was like the e.t. and jaws era but he still is involved in the industry and giving others a chance.

plus he is a supporter of gay rights, and minorities, involved in the boy scouts of america, many jewish memorial communitiies/events, and he withdrew his services from the beijing olypmics in protest of its goverment or so on, don't quote me i'm not 100% and don't got links/facts to back this all up.

anyways, yeah he is easily one of the most famous directors of our time, along aside with ridley scott, tim burton, francis ford coppola, george lucas, ron howard, clint eastwood, martin scorcesse

one of my fav movies, catch me if you can

one of my fav tv moments, him announcing and giving peter jackson the best picture oscar for return of the king

wow can't believe i wrote that much lol
