If we have not blown the world into a million pieces, my guess would be the end of gasoline vehicles.

Well at this rate within the next 100 years we'll be out of fossil fuels, room for garbage, trees (lumber, paper, 02) and desertification will lead to severe water shortages. So I'm curious if civilization as we know it will even be around by then.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. I"m sure by 2278 we'll have moon colonies.

Assuing we survive, find a way to deal without fossil fuels, find a way to recycle all garbage and waste, here is what I think might happen:

Graphene will be the major player for all technologies. It's cheap and much, much better than anything at the moment. Graphene will be used in everything from cell phones to solar panels. In solar panels, graphene could make them up to 90% effecient (currently they are at most 25% effecient), this could solve a lot of energy issues in the future. Graphene also uses far, far less power than normal circuits. Cell phone batteries will last over a year before you need to recharge them because graphene can do the same thing as today's chips but use far, far less power.

Quantum computers will be in the experimental stages but not ready for purchase by consumers. They are much more complex and crazy then you can imagine so physicists will have a tough time making them do even the easiest calculations, but they will be in a rough working format.

Speaking of physics, the higgs bozon will probably be found by then, opening up a new chapter in the quantum physics saga. I hope gravity is almost completely understood by then so we can start generating our own gravitational fields.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

We better have much more than that, Mars better have been colonized. At that point we should have hopefully found a way to travel at the speed of light so we can go to other Earth like planets.

2278 is far away from now. 266 years into the future. Think about it, 266 years ago, it was the year 1746. The 1700's were the beginning of the science, it was the age of the enlightment were science got a big place in society. So 266 years from now is actually a pretty good number of years to measure scientific advancement. Because 266 years ago it was pretty much the beginning of scientific advancement. There were no planes, no antibiotics, no computers, no cars, no tv's, no central heating, no man made electricity in 1746. We did have books and were able to build huge buildings, had sewers, the wheel and fire. That's some huge advancement in a very short period of time, simply because of the age of the enlightment when (a lot of) people realized they had the power of reason. What will happen the next 266 years, i dont know there will be huge advancements in space technology because colonizing the moon and mars is very expensive and if the earth is still big enough i don't think that will happen, there are other goals here like solving world hunger and poverty and make sure every country has a stable and fair governement. I think the biggest advancements in science will be in nanotechnology, genetherapy and medicine. I think will find a way to live forever or at least very long when we can rebuild or modify our bodies. Then i think we will be able to achieve some sort of space travel that's faster than today, because in our current form i can't see us travelling at light speed or faster. In 2278 i think we will have achieved a way to build a human body and let the a human spirit host it (so transferring our spirit from our natural body to a new, artificial one) What this will do with our souls is a totally different question. After that i think we will achieve to travel through space using quantum mechanics.

In the next 20 years, I predict much more widenly starvation, wars over water, and rivers and land tainted with methylmethane, pesticides and medications. These problems might cause much more awareness in 2278 in keeping the Earth's environment healthy.

I love the meticulous display of detail in this thread. While to the ignorant it may seem the OP simply picked a random year; there's dossiers full of considerations and motivations. What does 2278 mean to you, gamerguru100?

Absolutely nothing! I'm obviously not gonna be alive then. I'm asking out of boredom. :P
