I think the Romans, since they conquered everyone else (Including SPARTANS!) and were more advanced than any culture on earth until the past century, and they had an awesome military and did awesome stuff and lived pretty luxouriously with all there running water and baths and spa's and gladiator fights and chariot racesand brutal public executions ETC.
Plus there military was aweomse, I mean they made the Greek phalanx obselete and in many battles slaughtered thousands of enemy's with little to no casualties. Plus their stict and discipline soldiers were much like our military's now, I mean Gaius Marius changed the way army's were organized, and we should be thankful for that, would you rather have to fight everytime a war goes down or let professional soldiers get paid to do it?
Romans however took for granite all their luxury's and way of life, which people did not have afterwords.
Well just look at everything they made,a giant Colliseum that could hold 80,000 people, aCircus Maximus that can hold 250,000 thousand people, roads spanning all across Europe!
Keep in mind though I love all other ancient cultures because I'm into ancient history. Remember that many people in ancient times like Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Carthaginians, and Persians were more advanced than people after ancient times, obviously we are more advanced now in 2007 but really, take a look at the Pyramids, or the Colliseum, or the Antikythera mechanism, could we really have built those 150, even100years ago?
Look atRoman and Greek soldiers, the reason they were so successful is that unlike barbarians from other parts of europe and the Middleast, these soldiers were discipline and held formation, so if you charged into the Greeks, you werecharging into a forest of long spears, or if you charged into Romansyou were charging intovolley's of jeavelins and would be sliced away with a gladius or even crushed to death by the nonstop march of the Legionaires. And then even if you broke a Roman or Greek line they were still better fighters in individual combat with swords.
When Romans and Greeks fought it wasn't normally scattered hand to hand fighting like in the movies but a solid line of men marching and killing anything in their path.
Well, so anyway what do you think is the best country or empire of citystate in ancient times?
