I think the Romans, since they conquered everyone else (Including SPARTANS!) and were more advanced than any culture on earth until the past century, and they had an awesome military and did awesome stuff and lived pretty luxouriously with all there running water and baths and spa's and gladiator fights and chariot racesand brutal public executions ETC.

Plus there military was aweomse, I mean they made the Greek phalanx obselete and in many battles slaughtered thousands of enemy's with little to no casualties. Plus their stict and discipline soldiers were much like our military's now, I mean Gaius Marius changed the way army's were organized, and we should be thankful for that, would you rather have to fight everytime a war goes down or let professional soldiers get paid to do it?

Romans however took for granite all their luxury's and way of life, which people did not have afterwords.

Well just look at everything they made,a giant Colliseum that could hold 80,000 people, aCircus Maximus that can hold 250,000 thousand people, roads spanning all across Europe!

Keep in mind though I love all other ancient cultures because I'm into ancient history. Remember that many people in ancient times like Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Carthaginians, and Persians were more advanced than people after ancient times, obviously we are more advanced now in 2007 but really, take a look at the Pyramids, or the Colliseum, or the Antikythera mechanism, could we really have built those 150, even100years ago?

Look atRoman and Greek soldiers, the reason they were so successful is that unlike barbarians from other parts of europe and the Middleast, these soldiers were discipline and held formation, so if you charged into the Greeks, you werecharging into a forest of long spears, or if you charged into Romansyou were charging intovolley's of jeavelins and would be sliced away with a gladius or even crushed to death by the nonstop march of the Legionaires. And then even if you broke a Roman or Greek line they were still better fighters in individual combat with swords.

When Romans and Greeks fought it wasn't normally scattered hand to hand fighting like in the movies but a solid line of men marching and killing anything in their path.

Well, so anyway what do you think is the best country or empire of citystate in ancient times?

Atlantas, definitely. i mean, they got airships, right? Can't beat that. I bet once we find out where it was and start diggin, we will find all kind of goodies, like Green-Ray Ultra High-Def DVDs, Ion-Plasma TVs, and statues of Suzumiya Haruhi everywhere.

Probably because it was the Romans. Had they not had their downfall they'd of had major breakthroughs in science, engineering, etc, etc that as a result took about 300 years to produce. Apparently just before the Empire fell they were months away from the Steam Engie.

They might have existed in the Atlantic years ago but were wiped out by a meteor or some natural disaster, but the Greeks might have been talking about someone else.

Otherwise they probably didn't exist though we have some chilling evidence...

Yeah if they had those months to work on it more they would've popped out of the gates of Rome in big steam locomotives with repeating ballistas and catapults on top running over barbarians and we'd all be speaking Latin.

The Greeks themselves were close to inventing hydraulics.

Makes you wonder how advanced we be now if all that stuff was finished back then. Or what discoveries (if any) we would have made had the Romans and/or Greeks stayed around longer.

In fact we recently discovered a water powered factory used by the Romans.

I thought you were gonna say that a bunch of Romans and Greeks invented a time machine 2000 years ago and traveled back now so they could fly planes into the world trade center.

The Roman Empre and the Chinese Empire were pretty much equal in strength and technologies around the time of Christ to about the 3rd century. The Greeks were definitely one of the greats before the birth of Christ. Lets not forget the Egyptians, I don't even think people today have the willpower nor the funds to build pyramids that big and sophisticated.

They Byzantine Empire was little more than the Eastern Roman Empire, and they continued on until 1453, just about 1 generation before Columbus sailed to the new world. They never managed to create a steam engine. But, they were able to organize building projects that western Europe could not imagine. Hagia Sophia is about the same height as Notre Dame. Hagia Sophia was built in less than 5 years in the 6th century. Notre Dame took over 100 and was built something around 700 years later.

There was no Soviet union in Russia 2000 to 3000 years ago, but there were simple barbarians inhabiting the area, the most notable are the Sythians.

Also! Are you from Mother Russia?

the chinese, the roman are uber great but the chinese did a lot of things that is usefulto us like paper, fireworks, martial arts, medicinal herbs, their mummification method is better than the egyptians, chinese cuisine, etc... and the ancient chinese culture survivedcompared to other ancient civilization.

There weren't too many interesting empires. Most of them were lands that got excited and killed a bunch of people to get more land.

To make an unoriginal answer....Who would have guessed....Rome.
