It's an asterisk, and on the computer, it is used for multiplying. You wouldn't use x, because x is a variable.

nah, if he put 3 + 2 x 3, then it would be, but 3+2*3 , or 3+2(3), order of operations says you multiply first. so you do that, before you add the 3.

What's the answer 9 or 15? If it's 9, what's the point of adding a 'star' instead of just using a regular variable like 'x"?

Don't quite understand the difference, non the less I still got the correct answer.

Once you get into algebra you stop writing out multiplication as 4x4=16 but as 4*4. If you put 4x x 5= on a comp the answer would be 20x^2 (20xsquared) because x is a variable instead of what you intended 4x*5=20x Basically just because the multiplication symbol looks like an x doesn't mean it is the letter x, because x is a variable. so to avoid confusion and error you use * in place of x as a multiplication symbol...OK now I'm confusing myself, it sounds so easy in your head to explain :( On a side note OP I got 12. Never did understand math.

If you use 'x' to multiply, it is confusing and can be mistaken for 'x' the variable.

Yes, the answer is 9. In this case, 'x' isn't a variable. That's the point.

15, considering that the asterisc is to replace the X times sign?

Edit: Now after thinking about it, the answer could be 9 ifthe asterisc is2(3).

It's simply order of operations.

You always multiply before you add. So you get 6+3= 9. Sizzolved.

Yeah, the dot's standard. The asterisk is used on a keyboard because the dot isn't easy access.

Sometimes people argue about between themselves even though they are on the same side of the argument. I think that this is an improvement.

I blame you, Staff, for this thread. mrmusicman247
I, for one, am standing up to the oppressive tyranny of Staff in the name of you, the common humble OTer. God bless you sir and long live this lock Anyway since these threads seem to pop up every now and then, It's 9 because order of operations. (3+2)*3 would be 15 though. But I don't think there's an agreed standard so you might get away with saying 15. but no-one cares about that so let's just keep math polls on fb where they belong
