I am in Ontario, but have lived in BC, AB, QC, NB, and ON.

General consensus...tired of that nonsense, who cares, go, get out and goodluck with that, stop crying, stop asking for special priviledges, stop living off other provinces money and then complaining about them.

Having said that, I have met very few people who dislike Quebecers. Everyone that visits likes Montreal, Quebec City etc, other than some expected normal angst about language and even then most people appreciate that Quebecers are generally very gracious in using English.

So I'd say there is a difference between how most view the people vs view the silly politics of the province.

I lived in Cornwall, Ontario for a few years, and took a few trips into Quebec. Montreal was fine, but Quebec City was a terrible experience. I'm from the US and speak no French, my ex-wife was Canadian and spole it fluently.

At a resturant in Quebec City the waitress refused to take my order in English, even saying in perfect English "This is Quebec sir, we speak French here."

Yeah, we left. And fvck that place.

I always thought it was the height of arrogance that they make Ontario have all their public signs in both languages, but once you cross into Quebec the English disappears. (i.e. in Ontario, the street signs say Rd. and Rue, for instance.)

You're one of the reasons I wish Alberta would split and form it's own country along with BC, Manitoba, Sasquatchiwan, Yukon, and NW Territories.

The people who don't speak French are cooler than the ones who demand you speak French. Because... people who speak French for some reason don't like people who speak English, kind of pre-mature and primadonna like if you ask me. I mean, calm down, bro, join the rest of the world in English.

Honestly, I have never met anyone from Quebec but almost every single Candadian I have met are really nice, fun people. I saw next to a girl in high school who just moved from Ontario and she was really cool. Canada is cool.

Pretty much as far back as Canada has been independent Canada has had problems with Quebec and the rest of Canada, they want all these special rights and privledges and government help. They demanded that things like signs, products, instruction manuals come in both English and french, yet in Quebec there are MAAAANY places where they won't have a single bit of english anywhere. The politics there are pretty atrocious and there's a sense of being better than Canada which is where there is a separatist movement for Quebec to leave Canada, albeit with bonuses of getting money from the Canadian government still. But i'm an Alberta guy, so maybe i'm just bitter we have to pay the other provinces so much money and all we get is flak.

One thing that sticks in my mind is the 2008(?) federal elections. 10% of Canadians voted for the Green party. 0 seats. 28% of Canadians voted for the NDP. Only a few seats. 12% of Canadians voted for the Bloc de Quebecois, Huge number of seats, just behind the Liberals and the Conservatives. Sure, in the last election, the Bloc du Quebecois had less success, but the fact still remains that the average Quebecois has more voting power (due to the number of ridings per capita in Quebec) than any other person in Canada. Therefore, the leading party has to pander to the Bloc if they have any hope of holding power. Their entire political strategy involved holding the country hostage. Here's another example. There's currently protests in Quebec right now, because the students there are angry that tuition costs are going to be raised. After the raise, they'll still be far lower than any other province in Canada. Know why Quebec can afford to do that? Equalization payments. They're supposed to help support the provinces and territories that have less natural resources. Quebec has oodles of natural resources, yet they receive huge equalization payments. In 2009, they were given more money than every other province in Canada put together. Lastly, signage. There is only one place in all of Canada that isn't required by law to prominently display both official languages. Guess where it is? Quebec. In fact, in Quebec you can actually get in trouble for displaying English too prominently on signage. Any more questions as to why I think Quebec is a leech, a parasite, and full of ridiculously self entitled people?

That's awful. I hope you told them that it's not a good way to treat a tourist. You did the right thing by leaving that place.

The separatist movement is not about being better than the rest of Canada, it's about being able to make our own decisions. Quebec's priorities are, for the most part, different from Stephen Harper's priorities.

That's a really hard one for me. When it comes to politics governing economics i tend to lean a bit more in favour of the west and conservative veiws and think people should stop riding Alberta's sausage over the oilsands. With that said, I do tend to really like people from Ontario and Quebec, and i really enjoyed Toronto because of it's atmosphere and liberalism. But for the sake of my paycheque. Yay ;)

Not personally. As I said earlier in my post, however, I know enough about Quebec's behaviour in national politics to know that there's enough self entitled and arrogant people in positions of power to make Quebec heavily disliked by much of Canada. I'm sure the average person from Quebec is quite nice, much in the same way that the average Muslim is quite nice, or the average frat-boy is quite nice, or the average user of a site that will not be mentioned is quite nice. They say the cream rises to the top, but in many cases, so do all the nasty crusty bits.

As I told Frosty, the separatist movement isn't about self-entitlement. I haven't recently heard anyone complain about equalization, but there are reasons why equalization is in place. If you're interested, you might want to read about common misconceptions about equalization.

I'm not sure what else in your post talks about self-entitlement. Some laws are quite harsh against people who don't speak french, but on the other hand, there has to be laws to protect the french language.

I don't speak of open rebellion from the very start. I'm talking about a peaceful secession. :)

One that arguably would be beneficial to both parties. Ontario and Quebec can pursue whatever green, carbon-taxing, welfare-state policies they want. And the West can unleash it's natural resources and try to get the highest GDP per capita in the world. Win win in my eyes.

Of course in a few years it will start looking like North Korea and South Korea.... But that'll be Ottawa's problem not Calgary's.

I didn't mean literally but the population for trades in the west are dominated by east coasters because of the lack of jobs. There are 4 people in my program of 32 that were actually born in Alberta. Many went to Uni in Ontario/NFLD/Labrador and got degrees but couldn't get jack.

But that'll be Ottowa's problem not Calgary's.

There would never be a peaceful secession. It would be a war from day one.

Which sucks.

Maybe Alberta can strike a deal with China.

[QUOTE="Communist_Soul"]

[QUOTE="FrostyPhantasm"] Not to mention most of the East is currently working in the West anyway..FrostyPhantasm

Ontario alone has 3.5x the population of Alberta.

I didn't mean literally but the population for trades in the west are dominated by east coasters because of the lack of jobs. There are 4 people in my program of 32 that were actually born in Alberta. Many went to Uni in Ontario/NFLD/Labrador and got degrees but couldn't get jack.

Well that might be due the fact you earn a lot more in Alberta then the other places. But unemplyment is pretty big in the east almost like the states.

Why are you all still speaking French? Speaking French while surrounded by English speaking people, considering English is dominant in commerce, seems like a self-imposed disadvantage.

Exactly, we have camp sites up here that have thouuusands of people from the East over here working, i don't get why Eastern Politics are so butthurt over oilsands when it's pretty much keeping most of the Eastern provinces afloat.

Maybe Alberta can strike a deal with China.

Maybe Russia instead? But U.S would just come in occupy Canada in the end.

Also see you are back to Storm_Marine, how did it going with the Persian girl (or where she was from)?

China's lust and need for natural resources is greater. And heck, in a decade or two China's probably going to be calling the shots. Not the US. So it's probably best we get on China's side sooner while we have a choice.

The girl never existed. More's the pity.

Well the Atlantic are the ones being kept afloat. They (referring to the Atlantic provinces) cry because their tiny provinces suck in terms of economic value.

I think it's one of those pride things.

I suppose but that pride seems to create a disadvantage for them commercially.
