Resolution refers to the number of pixels in a 2D space. For example, a resolution of 1600x1200 means that the space contains 1,600 pixels in width and 1,200 pixels in height, for a total of 1,920,000 pixels. The more pixels there are, the more detail that can be displayed on screen.
A low resolution basically means a resolution with a relatively small number of pixels displayed compared to average.
