So I'm going over to the US Embassy tomorrow, for a discussion about said dream. Here's an exert from the email.

"The Occupy Wall Street protests have caused American commentators to re-examine the idea of the American Dream. Generally, the American Dream means that because Americans are lucky to live in a place full of opportunities, those who work hard will be successful and will realize their dreams. What does "the American Dream" mean to you? How do our expectations of the future shape the present?"

I have a few ideas of my own, but I found the topic interesting, and would like to hear something from actual Americans.

I always thought the american dream was to own your own house. Some people say its to do better than your parents. Basically, I think it's the dream that any person from any background can find success.

The American Dream no longer exists.

The rest of the first world has far caught up to the economic opportunities that once were present in America because of the large land and lower population. That's changed since the population has increased and low-skill jobs are shipped to Asia.

There was a time where you could make it well in this country with nothing but common sense, a strong will, and determination. Not anymore. There is no changing that.

I feel the "dream" still exists, but it's different for everyone.

I can say I just want to find a job that I will enjoy, and will pay me enough to where I can pay off bills. Then hopefully find somone to make a family with.

Not looking where you are going in work, falling over, hiring a sleazy lawyer and suing them for millions of dollars. That's the dream.

That or drug trafficking.

I always saw the american dream as propaganda to further a consumerist agenda. And by watching the state of the current US economy the American Dream came true.

If you take a look at all the hard labour jobs, contractors, anything that involves manual labour ie. working hard ... its all foreign people. I know I work in the trades. These people come from 3rd world countries, or dictatorships and they're happy to work their butts off for next to nothing. The avg. american wants the high paying job that doesn't require doing anything and spend 150% of their income and have mutiple credit cards.

The American Dream is usually having a steady paying job, owning a home, and having a family. My personal "American Dream" is to make it big in the film industry. I wanna be a writer, just like my father. He won a Pulitzer Prize, and he says I have more talent at my age than he had. And considering he went to a bad school for undergrad, and got a masters at Northwestern, it's not out of the realm of possibility. For me, it's Hollywood or bust. If I work the rest of my life at a Subway in Van Nuys, while pursuing my dream, I'll be fine with that. Live life with no regrets.

Everybody still has their own "American Dream," though. Obviously the one that is always talked about is no longer there, but each person has some sort of personal goal which would satisfy them and make them enjoy their life. It's like Of Mice and Men, Lennie just wanted a farm so he could pet the rabbits. That was his "American Dream." For some, it's becoming a cop, and having a family, others it is just sitting lazily on their behind doing the bare minimum to get by. I have a friend who said he would be happy if he was homeless as long as he has his friends. Others want to become famous. Each person has their own interpretation of an "American Dream."

what you are talking about is no longer exclusive to America, its more suited to other countries. You now have more a chance of fulfilling the 'American Dream' in Canada or Sweden......even Poland (no lie, look that country up they are doing amazing). Im starting to think that the only reason America was the sh!t in the 50s and 60s is because the rest of the world literally was sh!t after ww2

I get what you're saying. It's not that simple anymore. Obviously there are other countries that are in a better position than America, financially. Im just saying, America isn't Ethiopia, if you have a goal, especially one as simple as getting a decent job and supporting a family, you can do it. Yes, in this economic climate it is more difficult than it previously was. You can't just come here like you used to be able to and get a good job, but if you know what you want out of life, and work towards it, then you can achieve your dream. And even if your dream is a pipe dream, like mine, you can still chase it. I'd rather die knowing I did everything I could to do what I wanted to do, than live my life the way others say you should.

As a child I thought of the American Dream as a concept which states that you are capable of doing whatever you put your mind to. This is not to say that everyone becomes president, but if one seeks it then a comfortable life with a dog, white picket fence, two and a half kids, and a loving spouse is possible. However, as time has passed I have gained some issues with the idea. Basically, sometimes life does not always work out the way we plan. Sometimes bad things happen and we end up without a job despite a decent education, our child dies, or our spouse leaves us. Life is not always comfortable and perfect. Despite the realization that life is not always perfect despite our efforts we can find joy in life by other means. Rather than striving to find the comfortable American Dream life I believe the best life lived is one that willingly sacrifices comfort for the sake of others and the sake of God's glory. Rather than finding joy in the possessions we might gain from having a great job, we are to find joy in the little things in life, in serving others, and in serving God. Our lives should not be spent seeking after the romantic pursuit of a comfortable life without worries, but our lives should be spent sacrificing ourselves for the sake of others. Rather than seeking to be better than everyone else we should seek to better the lives of others. This life is not the idealized American Dream of my youth but it is the dream I have for how I wish to spend the rest of my life.

I'm guessing to live the typical high-middle class American life. Find a job making a ton of money, live in a large house living like a bachelor/bachelorette for a good few years until you one day decide to settle down and have a family.... I don't think many people have gotten the chance to live the American dream though....

Entrepreneurship. With new technologies requiring massive resources and team efforts as science increases in complexity, that age may soon be ending. I think this is apparent in the increasing income disparity. Old money now rules the day.
