I usually see this word use a lot, and sometimes feel I'm not really sure what talent is anymore.

It's a person's innate, natural aptitude. It's often confused with skill, which is the learned application of natural ability to perform a specific task. So if you learn an instrument, for example, your natural ability (talent) will affect how quickly you develop and how proficient you may eventually become, but it is only through work that you use that talent to develop skill. A person who is extremely talented as a musician will never be able to play well without developing skill through practice.

To put in simpler terms, it is something that you are really good at doing and would make some money for it like drawing.

But one can be skillful without being talented, don't you think? For example, a musician could be extremely skilled but without talent, his playing wouldn't have any soul or substance. I'm not disagreeing with you on anything you said, I'm simply trying to open the discussion further.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, with respect to music, you can become a very good player even with limited talent if you're willing to work hard for it. And you can develop a sense for musicianship that is NOT innate if you have good instruction to go with that hard work. For me, the important thing to understand is that talent and skill are two different things. People use the terms interchangeably when they aren't really interchangeable.

Do you think that if a person who is not really talented, but was given the good instructions, and has worked hard be able to match a person who is talented but who was also given the same instructions and practiced the same amount as the one with no talents.

Both can become skilled through practice. But all other things being equal, a person with more talent will do better than someone with less talent, either with respect to learning faster or achieving greater proficiency. The nature of natural ability is that it puts one at an advantage by comparison to those who have less.

I've always thought of talent as being an inherent ability to do something particularily well, that most people can't, without any prior training. For instance, anyone can learn to draw at professional levels and even make a living as an artist, but someone who is talented at drawing can draw suprisingly well without any prior training or practice. And no, you don't have to be able to make money out of something for it to be a talent. Rolling coins over your fingers is a talent but you can't really make money out of it. Also I believe its only a talent if the skill is learnable. So being able to bend your fingers backwards is not a talent because it's not learnable, you have to be born double jointed.
