What download speeds can I expect with 3 Mbps?

I'm about to subscribe to an ISP, so far I've been aiming towards Verizon becaue they provide free equipment while AT&T requires you to pay 50-70$ for just a modem that converts your phone line to Ethernet. It says I can get 3 Mbps which is 768k download. But realistically what download speedscan I expect with 3 Mbps? Cuz it obviously never really is at it's max.

It really depends on how far you live from the exchange and whether you are using an ADSL or Cable... I think.

Verizion is DSL I believe. Either way, 3 Mbps is 300 kb/s. A 56K dial up modem will give you download speeds of about 4 kb/s, so doing the math, a 3 Mbps connecting is pretty fast. It's not the fastest, but fast. Good for gaming.

With cable you're speed will vary based on how many people are using it near by you... but with DSL you should get pretty much exactly what they tell you you're getting.

3 Mbps is actually about 366 KB/s or something. 56K should actually be around 7 KB/s. It's really tricky when we use bits for transfer and bytes for storage.. :S

Nope ;) A good 56k connection will get you around 5.5kb/s. But most of the time you'd be hard pressed to reach 4 - 4.5kb/s

It's because it's dial-up.....it's impossible to consistently download at the maximum 56k speed, let alone reach that kind of speed in the first place. But sometimes it's exeeded speeds of around 20kb/s towards the end of a download.....which is epic wtf btw.

I don't think you did your math right because 375 is 1/8 of 3000.

375 is your max download rate.
