Maybe so, I do not know. However, in the context of the English language, the language the question was asked in, same difference between asking person's gender, and their sex.

Actually, sex is what sexual organs you have, i.e. penis vagina.
Were as gender is more of a mind set, if you were a male being a transvesite when you were asked what sex you are, you would tick male, how ever when they ask what gender you are, you would say female, as its in the head emotionally etc.
