Honestly wouldn't change my life much. I don't really play games seriously... I'll hit up Mario Kart 64 or SSB every once in a coons age... People would waste less time, so i guess that would benefit me in a positive way. It would probably make the world a better place to be honest.
No it wouldn't. People need recreational activities and for alot of people video games are just that activity. If you're going to take video games out of the world then why not take out all recreational activities??? They all technically "waste" time.

Games are not typically a social activity, unlike sports. Social activities encourage interaction with other people, forming relationships, etc. Everyone has to agree that that is positive. Book reading increasing intellectual prospects, allowing them to make more informed decisions about things... In general reading more leads to being more curious about other things. E.g. reading hawkings breif history in time got me curious about string theory, which made me read another book, and another, and another. If book reading was encouraged instead of video game playing in adolescents people would probably do better in school, thus producing more doctors, scientists, etc. And there is no possible way anyone can say that reading a book is not as productive as playing a game. Games get mind numbing after a while. I'll find myself playing a game and completly zoning out, not thinking at all... Books, especially non fiction, force the reader to be active and make connectons... and even the best video game story does not compare at ALL to works of classic literature.

What games are you playing? I like games much more than TV specifically because they engage the player and force me to think about what's going on.
By the way, speaking about doctors, you might find this interesting.
But all things you just said technically waste time. Are you accomplishing anything by playing sports besides having fun? You can interact with other people by having a LAN party with friends, playing online with friends ext ext. Hell, (though I wouldn't encourage this) a couple just recently got married and they met over Xbox Live. BTW last time I checked reading IS more encouraged then playing video games.hockeyjunkie28
No reading is not more encouraged than playing video games. Maybe in an academic setting, but that isn't what gets people to do things. For example, I made a "what was the last book you read" thread last night and an overwhelming majority of the responses were "I cant rememeber." Reading is NOT encouraged by society as a whole. over 1/3 of americans havnt read a book in the last year.
Overstimulation is probably part of it. Reading a bunch of words on a white page isnt near as compelling when your mind has been softened by moving things around on a large flashing colored tv screen for hundreds of hours of your life.
Most people that play video games do not do it with other people. Last I checked in order to play a sport (a common one, im sure you can think of some oddball example) You have to have at least one other person... Playing on a team you're going to develop social skills that will be important later on in life.
Well first off making a "what was the last book you read" thread on OT and expecting serious answers was a BIG mistake. I want a link telling me that 1/3 of americans haven't read a book this year (Fox news doesnt count). Everyone I know plays games with other people. Xbox live has millions of subscribers. Out of the 18 million xbox 360's sold ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360) 10 million of them have xbox live. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live). Right there that tells you that over 10 million people play video games together and interacting together socially. This isn't even counting the Wii, PS3 and PC. I don't see how you can say that video games aren't social. The people who play in a dark lit room by themselves for hours and hours are the minority.hockeyjunkie28

This site (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13820) reports that 62% of gamers play online... A pretty large number, but you have to figure that a lot of games dont have online play, most notably the ones that consume the most amount of time. This means, like i hinted at before, that most people that are playing video games at any given moment are NOT playing them online. Also, just because someone is playing online doesnt mean that they are socializing at all. In a lot of online games nobody even talks because a lot of people dont have microphones. Even on xbox live only about half the people you play with actually talk. You simply cannot compare "online socializing" (even at its BEST) to actually going out and socializing in the real world.

Everyone who buys an Xbox gets a free mic. I don't know what games you play but the ones I play there are ALOT of people talking...too many at once actually. I'd guess that over half of the games made for 360 are multi-player. I'm not trying to say that Xbox live is superior to going out and socializing but there is no way you can honestly say that it is anti-social.

The 360 core doesnt come with a mic to my knowledge. And I would say that its antisocial. You're hding behind the walls of the internet and talking to people that you dont know and never will know. That isn't socializing. You can say whatever the hell you want with little consequences, leaving people to take on false personalities... people they wish they could be in real life, etc
Going back to my original thesis.. Less video game playing = more book reading. More book reading = smarter people. Smarter people = more likely to get an advanced dgree. More advanced degrees = more improvemetns in science, technology. These improvements lead to a better quality of life in general, and a longer life at that.
Im not saying ban video games, im saying people play them waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much and deprive themselves of things like books. People who play video games like that find books boring because there are no flashing colored lights and what not. its terrible.
