I really want to like Opeth, but I just can't. I love the music, but not the vocals at all.

I would honestly like them better if they did vocals like the beginning of this song http://youtu.be/Nh7ISFbs5q4

I know the Vocals are what "makes" the band, but I'm looking for progressive metal that has softer vocals, similiar to Dream Theater maybe.

If no harsh vocals is what you want, their latest album is just what you're looking for (and to a slightly lesser extent, their Damnation album).

Anyway, if Opeth never had that death metal side to their music, I'd like them nowhere near as much. The contrast of both light and heavy is what I really enjoy about them.

Good choice of song btw.

You should listen to their album Damnation then. It's different from the other Opeth albums.

If Opeth never did death metal, I would be that much happier with that death metal scene. They're lolbad.

Check out Ayreon, Cynic, Evergrey, or Agalloch. I highly recommend both Ayreon and Agalloch. There may be some harsh vocals scattered about on those bands' albums, but they're far and few between. You could also check out Porcupine Tree which is the band that Opeth is trying so damned hard to be.

Their newest album Harvest has no harsh vocals, Opeth still has incredible musicianship, one of the few metal bands my musician friends will care to listen to because of it.

I love them because of the musicianship and I just kind of deal with the harsh vocals.

Wish I could do that. If I hear harsh vocals I just turn the music off. It annoys me to the point where I don't care how good the band is.

Well If you want good progressive metal with nice clean vocals I would recommend Arcturus and Age of Silence.

Being prog doesn't constitute a band as unique or talented. If it were not for the death metal vocals, I don't think they would have garnered as much fame. Just listen to Heritage, it really isn't anything special in terms of prog.

Opeth are a mixed bag, I appreciate them for their influence on later prog death bands like Be'lakor and Ikuinen kaamos. But I can't stand listening to them due to the fact that they stay in blues territory, and don't ever write anything memorable or moving.

Their fusion of death and progressive metal is what makes them good. Whenever they've left the death metal out, the results have been horrible (Damnation and Heritage). Also the harder Mike tries to be progressive, the more boring the album is (Ghost Reveries and Watershed).

Glad to see I'm not the only one. :) I have no problem with death metal vocals, though.

i also recommend Fates Warning and older Queensryche for good clean vocals, plus they are pioneers of progressive metal.
