So I'm thinking of taking up a new hobby: learning to play an instrument. I want to either learn how to play the piano or guitar. The only thing is, I need to TEACH MYSELF how to play one of those instruments, so I'd like to learn how to play the easiest. I've played the guitar before so I've kind of got the basics down and such, but if I were to learn to piano, I'd need to start from scratch.

I honestly like the sound of piano over a guitar, but I still don't know yet.

So what do you guys think?

Well if you're teaching yourself, I think the guitar would be easier. But honestly, everyone plays the guitar... go for the piano.

Piano is pretty fun and more useful in life. It's not to hard to be honest. Just buy books.

Ok, I did piano for 6 years. I've done guitar for 4 years. Guitar IS A LOT more fun. Especially when you get good and can play with friends and everything. It is also very easy to teach yourself because there are countless videos on youtube like guitar lessons/ tips and tricks etc. Go for the guitar.

If you prefer the sound of a piano and only want to learn one, I'd definitely suggest going for that. Both are rewarding, and can be self taught. In popular culture, many people find playing guitar 'cooler', but you'll find that generally when people find out you play piano, it makes them view you as being smarter. A lot of musicians (Matthew Bellamy, Christ Martin - two of my favourites) have learned both, and incorporate them into their music. You can learn both at the same time, switching to whichever depending on what mood you're in. It will also help broaden your musical range, as they both centre around different types of music.

If all you care about is learning an instrument, feel free to go for the guitar.

If want to go beyond that and learn about music itself, go for the piano.

Too many people play guitar. **** the piano and learn keys/synthesizers. They're more badass, and can actually be really helpful to a lot of bands in a wide variety of musical genres:)

The piano is easier to learn, but far more difficult to master.

go with the piano, I pretty much learned from teachers on youtube. You'll run into a problem though, playing with both hands but if you have someone to teach you it won't take too long to learn, you just have to keep practicing

I'd go for piano, but it'll be much harder to teach yourself that than it would a guitar.

How can't you learn music ona guitar? For some the visual representation of a fretboard is easier then black and white keys and in other cases visa verca.

I'm not much of a piano person (I used to know a little on it), but Piano isn't hard to learn by yourself IF you know how to read music. I play guitar, trumpet, and some drums and guitar is my favorite.
