They have to refrain from being a regurgitation of 20 other artists who were popular the previous week.Dylan_11So be unique? Got it. NEXTTTT!
Genuinely good singing makes the artist/band/group/song for me. Any thing from Alt./Pop/Reg. Rock to R & B to Oldies
Anything that doesn't break a few simple rules of mine. They can't be in it to generate money for themselves or someone else. The album must be good, not just a few songs. The music should be unique in some way. The songwriting and structuring must be quality. KHAndAnimeWhy shouldn't they be in it to get profit? Surely thats why anyone does it?

No, musicians make music for self expression and because they enjoy making music. Worthwhile musicians anyways. Did Vincent Van Gogh paint with the intent of making money? If an artist wants to make money, they can get a job. If they want to sell their art, that's cool too. But if they want to create art purely for profit, it's not art - it's simply business.
I have rather eclectic tastes, from Mozart to 2Pac to Dave Matthews. I have no respect for people who go around talking about "bands," as this term conjures images of ignorant, spoiled, white, suburban kids who are desperate for direction and/or expression/validation.
Some good music to me is where that person can actually sing, but not only can they sing, they have a great beat to go with it, and the flow is nice. R&B fits that category... NOT THE MAINSTREAM R&B THAT IS. Like Rihanna for instance. She's mainstream and I wouldn't consider her as an R&B artist. Pop, yes. That's what it sounds like. This is R&B. Not this.
And with rap. A good rap song not only has an artist who has a good flow, but it has a good beat to go with it and it's not stupid sounding.
I'd say interesting thought-provoking lyrics. None of that "I will always love you" crap and more " The number of the beast" and "welcome to the jungle".

Surely thats not such a useless endeavor.

KHAndAnimeI think the majority of bands want to make enough money to survive if it's going to consume them...If anything I think they deserve more praise, turning their passion into a career. There are obvious sellouts, but many are in it to make true music and money.
They have to be either Metal or awesome Rock like Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
I only like Metal with clean vocals so if the singer sounds like **** I won't listen to them.
Yeah Death Metal is crap. Bruce Dickinson FTW!They have to be either Metal or awesome Rock like Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Good man.
While I enjoy rap here and there, the things I look for the most when listening to artists are
Singing Voice: I great singing voice can make the difference, but also equally important is how you use your singing voice. We can't all have a voice like Whitney Houston, but there are other great artists out there who make music that fits their voice, for instance Damien Rice.
Originality: I want to hear something fresh. Lately in the rap and RnB game, I've been hearing the same tired ol crap regurgitated by a different singer. For rap it's money, women, and how gangsta they are. For RnB the song usually revolves around a girl...99% of the time. Either he is trying to get a girl back, or he is trying to get a girl to like him, or he is telling a girl to stop treating him wrong..blah blah blah! I want something new. And if you want to talk about a girl, atleast try and have lyrics that don't look like they were made by a random lyrics generator.
Lyrics over Beat: This applies a lot to rap. A lot of rappers *cough* Lil Wayne *cough* are getting by with great beats and terrible rhymes. Most rappers don't actually make their beats, so at the end of the day, we have a terrible "artists" getting paid for someone else's work.
Instruments: Not required, but playing an instrument or 2 can help. I especially like when singers compose their own music. Not all of it, but atleast some of it.
No noise please: I can't stress this enough. Ever play a song in the background while doing something else and then turn it off because it was getting too "loud". Like it was starting to distract you and irk you? I hate that. Great music in my opinion is great to listen to actively and passively. So for me Screamo music is automatically out, including a lot 99% of metal.
Those are just a few of my thoughts.

We live in a day and age where good and popular are rarely the same thing. Make of that what you will.KHAndAnime
True but here's to hoping we can change it.

Good point. I'm sure if I heard all the metal I would find some music I truly enjoy, but the stuff I've heard so far has made me lose interest. I have a metalhead friend though, so I'm gonna borrow his Ipod one time and get all his songs and sit down the whole day listening to nothing but metal and noting down the songs that I enjoy. While I enjoy rap here and there, the things I look for the most when listening to artists are

Whilst I don't like death metal myself nowhere near 99% of metal is "screaming". Listen to Ozzie Osbourne on "Mr.Crowley" or "Number of the Beast" and they are both sung in very theatrical ways. Those are only two examples out of thousands.
Music that doesn't sound like some prepubescent boy jittering into his mic about girls while his bandmates play a beat used in 2500 other songs. Music that doesn't sound like a retarded robot spitting hormonally-fueled crap while a computerized and repetitive beat strikes once every half second.
I think we can all "hear hear" to that. :PMusic that doesn't sound like some prepubescent boy jittering into his mic about girls while his bandmates play a beat used in 2500 other songs. The most important thing to me is how everything from harmony to melody to rythm interact and compliment each other. Rap and hip hop are way too simple for my tastes. There just isn't much going on musically. I love songs that develop and evolve as they go on. I like when artists take a melody apart and reconfigure it in interesting ways, or use multiple different melodies throughout a song that evoke different emotions and guide the listener on a journey as the song progresses.
Currently, anything by Deftones. But I also like music that can evoke different emotions and thoughts.
if you're rolling with the dipsetBiancaDKDoes not compute. Please explain more.

Screamo, 99% of metal... are you actually serious?I generally tend to lean towards well composed music; something that's more than fifth chords in 4/4 time constant strumming and such. There are of course tons of exceptions for example I enjoy a lot of thrash metal which is really nothing more than fifth chords and fast tremolo picking, but even then I tend to listen to the more progressive or technical thrash bands. My favorite bands are the ones that try to convey a simple message through complicated and intelligent ways. Instead of getting absolutely lost in technique and convoluted writing, just writing music in a well-composed, intelligent and progressive manner without compromising any of the intended emotions. For example early progressive rock of the 70s and 80s, early technical death metal & some progressive metal, the majority of classical music and jazz.
Of course I don't jump for anything that's automatically progressive or complicated; I enjoy 50s and 60s pop a lot but that's before Auto-Tune, banal songwriting and a purely business perspective on music. Some of that music is really nice, and the singers can actually sing most of the time.

This!! What's so useful about Death Metal anyway? It's just growling and you can't understand the lyrics.. Not evev while reading them along the music!
Also, good music is what I think it's good. Hard to explain really, as I like various genres, but if it has a good melody, technicality and is well-done and not shallow, then I go for it.
I mainly listen to Prog Rock/Metal, some Hard Rock and Rock, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Math Rock, Post Rock. As you can see, stuff that involves a good usage of instruments. I listen to some Ambient too.
