None of the crap that kids my age listen to. Although I see good music as basically all of it besides hip-hop, rap, and modern pop (Pop from about 1992 on), I love grunge music such as this, this, and this, and acoustic music like this, this, and this. Although I also quite enjoy the occasional blues song like this or this. You also can't go wrong with this(skip to 45 seconds in) or this.

I like all kinds of music, from metal to hardcore to punk to emo to other. If it's properly done, I'll listen to it. In general I tend to go for things that are either fast, hard as ****, danceable or a combo of such. Amongst my favorite bands: Off With Their Heads Streetlight Manifesto Choking Victim Remembering Never Shai Hulud I tend to go for the more negative bands.

I like a good bit of chaos in my music, 'dissonance' is a good word for it. To me a good artist is one that can set themselves apart from their peers within the genre. Musicianship is key, they have to be skilled and repeatedly demonstrate that skill in many different ways. The music also has to come off as genuine, this is hard to describe, but I hate when an artist sounds like their trying too hard. Not to single any particular genre out, but the vocals in some death metal bands comes off as really silly to me. I like to call it the 'pig Satan' voice, where they snort and growl like a pig with rabies. For me that's an example of trying too hard to sound demonic and menacing, and having it backfire horribly.

They have to be either Metal or awesome Rock like Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

I only like Metal with clean vocals so if the singer sounds like **** I won't listen to them.

yourmajesty90

Yeah Death Metal is crap. Bruce Dickinson FTW!

This!! What's so useful about Death Metal anyway? It's just growling and you can't understand the lyrics.. Not evev while reading them along the music!

Also, good music is what I think it's good. Hard to explain really, as I like various genres, but if it has a good melody, technicality and is well-done and not shallow, then I go for it.
I mainly listen to Prog Rock/Metal, some Hard Rock and Rock, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Math Rock, Post Rock. As you can see, stuff that involves a good usage of instruments. I listen to some Ambient too.

Your view on death metal is pretty ignorant to be honest. Is the fact that you can't understand what they're saying the only reason? Why do you need to anyway? :?

Whatever music sounds good to me personally? I'm not sure you can generalize "good" music and expect it all to have similar underlying characteristics. Some people believe that Miley Cyrus is the most talented musician alive.

Good music for me is such obsessive rhytm that it stucks in your head and you can't stop singing it for a month.

Well yea i mean that kinda did everything, but i was thinking more along the lines of a song like Here comes the Sun?Wolls
Yeah, that is a good example too. It's not a very complex song per say, but it doesn't necessarily follow conventional song structure. Think of it like this: if you've never heard it before, do you know exactly what they are going to do in the next bar? And the next four after that? For most of pop music, you probably can. And many of the bands I like, they are not so predictable.

Basically this. I would say my less favorite genre is metal but I like a few songs here and there and I honestly can't tell you why it just sounds good.

First off, music is subjective.

Second, good music to me is most Death Metal, Metalcore, and Classic Rock.

Whatever sounds good to me. Must contain some level of talent, whether that be instrumental (Generally the most important), vocal, lyrical (Only for hip hop, doesn't really mater in any other genre), or whatever. If it is just a talentless pretty face using autotune to cover their awful voice, with generic backing music that has been used in roughly 2895423 other songs, with boring generic "oh baby I loves you" or "Oh baby you broke my heart" or...well basically if it contains the word "baby" to refer to someone...no thank you.

While I enjoy rap here and there, the things I look for the most when listening to artists are

Singing Voice: I great singing voice can make the difference, but also equally important is how you use your singing voice. We can't all have a voice like Whitney Houston, but there are other great artists out there who make music that fits their voice, for instance Damien Rice.

Originality: I want to hear something fresh. Lately in the rap and RnB game, I've been hearing the same tired ol crap regurgitated by a different singer. For rap it's money, women, and how gangsta they are. For RnB the song usually revolves around a girl...99% of the time. Either he is trying to get a girl back, or he is trying to get a girl to like him, or he is telling a girl to stop treating him wrong..blah blah blah! I want something new. And if you want to talk about a girl, atleast try and have lyrics that don't look like they were made by a random lyrics generator.

Lyrics over Beat: This applies a lot to rap. A lot of rappers *cough* Lil Wayne *cough* are getting by with great beats and terrible rhymes. Most rappers don't actually make their beats, so at the end of the day, we have a terrible "artists" getting paid for someone else's work.

Instruments: Not required, but playing an instrument or 2 can help. I especially like when singers compose their own music. Not all of it, but atleast some of it.

No noise please: I can't stress this enough. Ever play a song in the background while doing something else and then turn it off because it was getting too "loud". Like it was starting to distract you and irk you? I hate that. Great music in my opinion is great to listen to actively and passively. So for me Screamo music is automatically out, including a lot 99% of metal.

Those are just a few of my thoughts.

II_Seraphim_II
Screamo and Metal are two completely different genres

Generally, good music is music that I enjoy listening to.

Any music that evokes emotions or that I can connect to is what I enjoy. It could be some sad ballad or a mainstream bubbly radio song, good music is different for every person.

If I can connect to the artist on a personal level, I tend to enjoy the music even more.

It has to evoke emotions and immersion.

I don't discriminate between independent artists and money-making businessmen as long it satisfies this criteria.

Jazz fusion, some jam bands, really anything that focuses on music itself. More than half of the stuff I listen to is instrumental, which for me has more emotion than most music with lyrics.

Anything that to me sounds good, even if it's in another language, and I prefer female singers but more of my music is male :P. I don't really like rap or any form of extreme metal like black and those things, I don't like screamo much either.

"What is good music to you?"

Anything that doesn't cause me to beat my head against a brick wall until the horrible noise stops. :)

On a more serious note, I have quite wide-ranging tastes in music (rock, metal, medieval, opera, country, new age, classical, folk, blues), but I prefer pieces of music that are well composed and offer some variety throughout. I do prefer singers to have good natural voices (unaided by technology), and I tend to prefer the sound of real instruments rather than synthesized, though I'm not averse to that.

All in all, if it sounds good to me, I will listen to it.

I do prefer to listen to music from CD or vinyl that has not been 'compressed' using lossy formats such as MP3, because I can notice the reduction in quality. I prefer to listen to music using a pair of good quality headphones that cancel out ambient noise.

to me, music needs to be emotionally purging. That way, genuine emotions of whatever is appropriate (generally a result of your day and environment) can fill the void.

For example, when I wake up in the morning and drive to work, I listen to metal because it gets all that anger and stuff about getting up early out of, so when I get to work (which I actually enjoy) the happiness fills my soul.

When I get off work, I listen to folk-punk because it generally is happy music coupled with dark, morbid, and rebellious lyrics. I do this because the music maintains the happiness I had all day, but the lyrics get me back to my true self (I have to be an extrovert at work and talk to people, which is not really what I am)
