China is really huge. Which part are you talking about? There are tons of foreigners/expats in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing. So i dont think theres a problem. And about that freedom thing, i've been there several times and encountered no problems. What do you want to do there that might be forbidden?

I spent a month in Taiwan, and life seemed pretty awesome there for the Taiwanese once you got out of high school. However, Taiwan has a much cooler government than China does..

i'm not american so i cant really agree or disagree, but communisim is the same as democracy in that it has its goods and bads, the biggest problem is that it is a very expensive form of government, but if u go down the path of china which u could say is capitalist-communism then this isn't a problem, personally even i will almost certainly get abuse, i think a constitutional monarchy is the best but only if is done right which is rare

Depends where in China. Needless to say China isn't really 'communist' anymore in the way it's economy is run. Living like the slight majority of the population in rural areas would be pretty terrible. The standard of living isn't great and the pollution is severe. Living in a city can be better, especially if you've got money. Living in Hong Kong or Shanghai affords most of the comforts you find in the West.

Seeing as how Communism is only good on paper, no, we wouldn't be better. Also, I like my rights, no need to go through life with the government controlling every thought, conversation, and action.

I attended 2 years of school in China and I go back in the summer every other year. China and America are a lot similar than many people think. They play the same sports, have similar goals and vision. Because of lower standards of living, everything is really cheap. The people there are very friendly towards foreigners.

Rural and urban China are very different. If you were just visiting the rural areas, it would be like a third-world country. Many farmers and peasants do not have air conditioning, adequate plumming and high paid jobs. Most urban areas can be comparable to developed nations (but more crowded). Mass numbers of skyscrappers dot every major city.

Of course the government has more control and some websites are blocked out but it's not like most people don't know what is going on. Pretty much anyone that is knowledgeable with a computer can use proxy servers to bypass the firewall and the government usually doesn't care if you do that (the government fears the lesser educated peasants/mobocracy). Criticizing the government is fine but you can't have random protests. I would say the current Chinese government is communist only by name but its policies are anything but communism. The government is definitely an authoritarian state but is nothing like DPRK or the USSR.

The government has a blacklist of people who criticize against them. If you give them an excuse to arrest you, then you're never going to hear the end of it.

It really depends where you are in China, but my impression is that it isn't nearly as uptight as it used to be. You just can't be too radical and say everything that you want to say lol.

Very nice. Hope you had a valuable experience while you were there. Did you get to visit any other part of China?

I'm from HK and have been in the US for the past 13 years now, I got married couple years ago and my wife is from Guangzhou so I have the opportunity to go and visit her folks back there. It is quite incredible to see how far China had come in a few short years

Yes, I've been to Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Lhasa, Xi'an in addition to Nanjing. The change has been amazing. I am going back next summer for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

I don't know, but a good friend of mine has lived there for a few years now, and she says it's really great. So, as I would imagine, it mustn't be bad at all, and freedom probably isn't an issue. Oh, and she's Canadian.

You probably have seen more of China than I have :). I've been to HK, Macau, Guangzhou, Beijing and Haerbin. We planned to go back to China every other year as well but will most likely just stick with Guangzhou since that's where her folks live. I would love to go to Shanghai though, I've heard Shanghai has a lot to offer and the culture very distinctive from HK and Beijing.

Have fun on your trip :)
