I mean, gawwwd!! Its like ever since Star Wars/Return of the Jedi, every film has to have a trilogy! I mean come on. Why not stay happy on a sequel? Why not make one, then a high quality TV mini series? Why not 20???

Examples:

Mad Max ( the Road Warrior )

Look Who's Talking

Terminator

Lord of the Rings ( well the book was a trilogy, so maybe this does not count... )

Austin Powers

Spider-Man

The Matrix

Back to the Future

Mission Impossible

The Mighty Ducks

Beverly Hills Cop

Blade

The Never Ending Story

Scream

Pirates of the Caribbean

Resident Evil ( should have ended at 1 !!! )

Robocop, Rush Hour, Final Destination... and so on...

Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesnt, you know? I mean, I like the Evil Dead and Living Dead trilogies, but other stuff should just rest in peace.

done.

Excellent post!!

I agree, the first real trilogy was Star Wars, he had a entire story to tell etc, wasnt just a shot in the dark.

The Godfather, turned out to be a trilogy but can see it wasnt meant to be, especially part 3.

Part 1 and 2 was amazing but 3 falls on its face.

trilogy just sounds rounded, etc, i too am annoyed that every damn movie is a trilogy, american pie 1 2 3, shrek 1 2 3, pirates 1 2 3, spider man 1 2 3,

the best trilogys are

star wars ep 1 - 3

star wars ep 4 - 6

lord of the rings 1 - 3, which is the best.

it's pretty well known that producers don't mind running something into the ground.  If it was completely up to them they'd make remakes/sequals until it stops making money.  Luckily those that normally own the rights to the characters tend to say enoughs enough after awhile.  They don't want to risk losing a great IP just cause some producer wants a quick buck.

Also audiences get sick of some IP after awhile, and 3 films seem to be the breaking point.  After the star wars trilogy there was the ewok movies, and even the christmas special which is a great example of running an IP into the ground.  Lucas could of made 1-3 then and still made some cash, but he was smart to put it off until now when audiences were craving more.

Yes, all hail the word Trilogy!!

I'm just so sick of it, especially when they try even harder but the sequels end up going straight to video ( Disney movies especially ).

You probably want to scratch off Pirates of the Caribbean; they're intending on making more.

Beverly Hills Cop will also see a part four.

Besides, it's the probably the 'third time's the charm' philosophy. And the word trilogy sounds so cool. 8)

Most stories come in three parts. The second part is always more interesting. The first is just setting things up, the second is the conflict, and the third is the resolution.

It's because 3 is the ideal number of movies to make to tell a good story. The first is exposition, the second is plot development and foreshadowing, and the third movie has the climax and denouement.

A trilogy is just a break down of the epic story format.  It is nothing new to storytelling.  This is the basic formula.

#1 Introduction and set up

#2 Exposition and elaboration on main conflict (often raising the conflict)

#3 Culmination of themes and closure

Trilogies just work.  Movie series that expand on this and have movies beyond three (often as filling), either repeat step two or start new problems and essentially reset the series.

In thruth most series can't survive beyond three movies.  Though the star wars prequels pail in comparison to the original three (they aren't terrible considering its suposed to be a space opera), they are a stand alone trilogy with a little cliffhanger at the end to dovetail episodes 4+

Tolkein wrote the Lord of the rings trilogy long before movie trilogies, it is a classic epic set up

Its the power of the number 3. The most majestic number of all. Triceratops, Triangles, Tricycles, Shamrocks, 3-D, RGB...

Anyways, I just feel that by the time they get to the third, its like watching nothing but poopoo. Unbreakable was supposed to be a trilogy, but I think it pulled itself together in one movie. Other movies like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Hero, the Last Samurai, Shaun of the Dead, and the Nightmare Before Christmas did the whole 3 rules thing but with in ONE movie.

Anyways, I'll shut up and start ranting about the whole Disney - Pixar thing later.

Because there needs to be a 'Beginning', a 'middle' and an 'end'. Or, as producers like to call it: 'good movie', 'ok movie', 'straight to video'.

You know who is responsible for movie trilogies? Us. We go and see movies that are overhyped, the movie companies make bucket loads of cash and then decide to make more because the first was popular. Blame yourself.

My reply explaining the basics of writing a story (the concept of beginning, middle and end) was shot down thanks to this genius post. Well done sir, I completely with a few exceptions. Return of the Jedi and King, respectively.

The Neverending Story shouldn't count as one either. The films were adapted from the novel. Altogether the 3 films actually comprise only 1/3 of the novel.
