There was an amazing Horizon documentary on last night that asked the question What Is Reality?

One idea scientists are taking seriously is that the universe is a hologram projection and that all of the information is stored on a 2D event horizon like a black hole.

It was mind blowing. Did anybody see it? UK peeps can watch it here. Anyone else I suggest you go look for it cause it was awesome. 8)

According to Wikipedia, 'Reality is the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or may be thought to be. In its widest definition, reality includes everything that is and has being, whether or not it is observable or comprehensible.'

Reality, as we know it, is different for each individual. Basically, reality is how each of us percieves the world around us.

What about Quantum Physics?

I'm not smart enough to understand it!

In seriousness, yes there are absolutes. However, different people may notice (or imagine) different things about those absolutes.

This. Perception creates reality. Everyone has a slightly different perspective and view of reality as they experience it. Also if you've looked into the Observer Effect, particles in the Quantum world seem to only settle on a location when you measure it. That seems to suggest that our very perception of existence causes existence to be there. There is a lot more to reality than any of us can ever really grasp or understand with five senses.

The holographic universe thing is a neat idea but it's not taken all that seriously other than as a mathematical exercise, partially because it relies on the utterly unproven discipline of string theory.

I don't take much Quantum Theory serious in general, and I'm 99% sure it's because I haven't done enough extensive research into it.

Perhaps I need one of these.

That's not reality, reality is what the world is really like without any perception. Which is impossible to perceive, or maybe it is possible to perceive but you can never be sure.

Yeah that's not what reality is. At best "perception" is a different definition of the world reality. At worst it's a delusion.
