What is suggested download speed and upload speed for good gaming?

I have to option of getting a service that allows up to 10 Mbps download, but it does 1 mbps upload for sure, but no higher.

I hear to have good connection speed for great online gaming, you should also have a really good upload speed.

Is the 10 Mbps enough to off set the lame upload speed, or does upload not really matter as much when it comes to gaming?

A few years ago people used to game online on connections of 512k/1mb (with no lag), which at that time was perfectly fine. It also depends on your distance from the server. A 10mb connection is largely overkill tbh.

1mb/sec down and 128k up is plenty for online gaming

I've been using 512k for online games for years, the only game I've had a problem with is Crysis for lag.

32 player matches in Bad Company 2 run without a hitch, same with 25 player raids (and 80 player BG's for that matter) in World of Warcraft. Hell, me and my brother were able to do two 25 man raids at the same time sharing the 512k connection, both of us having ventrilo running at the same time. There were a couple hitches, but nothing affected the gameplay much at all.

10mb/s is WAY more than you need for online gaming, upload speed for online gaming means almost nothing as well.

Edit: Here's a speed test, =P. This bullcrap costs us $60/month :cry:

I believe ping is the most important. I get no lag and my dl is roughly 1mbps but my ping is really low (like 5ms)

Is there a way to dertimine Ping? I mean I assume you cant like pay for low ping or anything, its just strickly what your ISP provides huh.

all you need for gaming is about 1/2 a meg up and down.

What is really important is ping, packet loss and jitter. Ping (aka latency) is how fast the information travels. The slower the information the more "lag" you get. Packet loss is important but this isn't really a problem anymore. If you're having packet loss problems it's probably your home network more than your ISP. Jitter is the amount of change there is in your ping. Some games will actually make adjustments to make latency less noticeable, but these can become bad if you ping is jumping from good to bad constantly.

Then maybe you can help me with this. I get much faster connection on my machine than you and on all of my online shooters there is a delay that causes me to get my ass shot off most of the time. Just tested at 76 pings, 20.46mbps D/L and 4.6mbps U/L. If you consider this to be outstanding then why do I have such a delay. I would have to say that there's a half second delay. There is no question that I shot the other guy first but on a kill cam it shows me standing there with my finger up the wazoo. What do you think?
