I'm a big fan of dirt or suffocating it with whatever you have on hand that is big enough to cover it, you never know what kind of fire it is (assuming it is a small enough to contain).
Depends on the fire. There is no single, stop-all solution that works in every circumstance. ABC fire extinguishers are the closest one can come to stopping most on every occasion..
