Community Colleges are regular colleges. A University is essentially a collection of colleges. Hence "University."

Community colleges are schools you can get into very easily that are pretty inexpensive. Often times people associate them with students who weren't cut out to go to a "real" college and are trying to get some bogus degree that won't actually get them a job. That is not always the case. Students who can't afford to go to more prestegious colleges (and this happens pretty often) can go to community colleges to earn the credits they need at an inexpensive rate and then transfer those credits to the college of their choosing to earn a degree that will have some credibility attached with it. This way they won't owe any money after they graduate or be in debt, and that's always nice when you're right out of college. There are also students who earn a 2 year Associate's degree in community college, which won't get them a job, but it'll get them into programs at other colleges. This, sometimes, cuts down on the numbers of years needed to earn your degree, but sometimes it increases it too. So when talking about doing something like that, it's pretty important to talk to people at both schools.

TC dont listen to this joke, I know smart people who go to Community College because they didnt get into the prestigious schools they wanted to get into (MIT, Harvard), so they ace the CC and got into a good college. This AL_Green is a joke, and shouldnt post his ridiculously biased opinion and expect people to acknowledge that he is alive, better yet trying to communicate with us.

Community college is more for trades or direct vocational training, if that's what someone wants to do there's no reason to go to university. I know lots of people who after highschool went to the local community college, completed their program in two years and then had a good paying career upon graduation. I, on the other hand, have a four year university degree, and guess what? I wouldn't be able to find a job with it. Which is why I'm back for another two years. I also know lots of people who dropped out of university to go to community college, because the training there would be more directly appilcable to them, would take less time and money, and would land them a job easier.

According to this you're saying "HS diploma" is better than "CC degree" and both are a lot better than an "actual college degree".

I wonder what type of college he learned his math from... Anyway, if you can save thousands of dollars in your first two years of college before transferring to a 4-year college, then why wouldn't you? Unless parties and the "college atmosphere" is important to you.

If you have any evidence of your claim, that would be great to see.

But i think thats really the root of the problem: It probably doesn't exist which makes the actual value of an expensive school questionable. A quick look through the yearly Princeton reviews doesn't seem to show much correlation between the actual quality of education vs the cost of the school.

I have my degree in computer networking from a community college and I am not the least bit unhappy about that fact. I love computers and the fact is in my case community college is a better option for learning about such a thing. The problem of course is employers want you to have work experience which is incredibly unfair of them because that is exactly what you want them to hire you for in the first place.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved the irony in that post.

I went to Community College for 2 years then transferred to a "regular" university for 2 years to finish my Bachelor's. The reason I went to a CC for those first two years instead of a regular university is because it saved me something like $35,000.

I worked IT at a Community College and took a handful of courses there and let me tell you they where actually a lot better and more hands on then just listening to a guy lecture and read powerpoints. This day an age even a 4 year degree from "regular" college really doesn't mean crap. Look at how many college graduates can't even make it with their more expensive piece of paper.

Also chances are the teachers at the Community College probably also teach at multiple state or private schools which I think is better then some jack hole professor at a 4 year school on tenure basically telling his work study to do all his work while he does pointless research with federal grant money and then write a book that maybe 10 people are going to read.

In AZ, we have the very best community colleges in the country... so the difference between, say, Mesa Community College and ASU is very small... basically, just price and national recognition.

If you can go to a major university, always go... but at least in AZ, community college is a very close second.

I hope you know at least in the IT world experience will trump any degree no matter what. I work with people that haven't even gone to school before but are Microsoft and Cisco certified and probably know more about how infrastructures and networks work then some kid fresh out of school. I'd rather work with some guy that is certified in something then some guy that just read a book and paid 35,000 for a piece of paper.

Alright well you IT guys go ahead and do that. For everything else in the world that's actually worth it it usually requires grad school, and no grad school with any credibility is accepting community college students. End of story goodbye.

Just ignore Al Green, anyway...

I am going to a community college at the moment and I gotta say I was impressed with the amount of attention that the courses I took recieve. Like some one else is saying its good for trades. My wife for example is able to take course to get both a degree in applied Sciences for Accounting but also for Culinary. Sure it will take her a long time to get both, but she plans on opening a resturaunt which is near impossible, but she plans on learning both sides, the buisness end and the food end of things. I plan on going here for the next two years and then go to the university for a Mass Com. Community colleges are great, and whoever says so is ignorant....

Let me dissect this for you, because your brain cannot comprehend what I am saying, all though a 3rd grader could understand this simple formula. They went to Commnuity College to ace it, therefore other colleges will recognize that they are a smart student, and they will accept them. Its as simple as that: It didnt burn my ears out to hear this, but apparently Al's brain has been burnt outsince the 3rd grade. AL no comprende amigo. A community college typically only offers Associate's Degrees and certificates in various things. To get a Bachelor's degree or higher, you need to go to a university or four-year college.

Community colleges are, however, a great place to start going to school, especially if you don't know what you want to do yet. They can help you find a major and go on the road to getting a Bachelor's degree by transferring to a university or four-year college.

A community college only offers a few degree programs/certificate programs like Associates Degrees and is very limited to what you can and can't think. Its a good start you get pretty much the same education as you would going to a regular college. Its much cheaper than going to a regular college/university. Plus community college classes are much smaller than a University classes which are much larger. A university offers Bachelor's Degrees, Master Degrees, and PH. D degrees if you want to get your Doctorate Degree. The only difference would be cost which is much cheaper at a community college than attending a university.

Community colleges are pretty much for learning a trade, or being used as stepping stones to transfer to a University. The thing to remember is no employer gives a **** if you went to a community college for two years. It's all about where you got your degree and what that degree is.

There's no shame in going to a community college. I'd be at one if it weren't for one of my parents working at a University ;) School is not cheap...

there is little to no difference in the quality of education. Education is a personal responsibility and it's on all of us to educate ourselves as we see fit and expand our minds. the only difference is social status. And to anyone with an educated mind, this is of little concern.

Community college is a two year college that is often about a third of the price to attend a state university. A ton of people use them as a way of getting basic learning courses done on the cheap before transferring to a more expensive four year university.

Doing higher education is kind of like earning bragging rights. The better school you go to, the more you can brag. Universities have a better reputation, whether because of society or because of merit. So in my humble opinion, if you are already going to spend a lot of money on your education, as might as well "buy" the best degree you can.

when you graduate high school, you have basicallythree ways to go:

1. Get a job
2. Go to a community (aka junior) college
3. Go to a "regular" college, aka university

Community college is much shorter than going to a university; generally, you can get your AS degree in 2-3 years. There are many advantages to a community college:

-more inexpensive than a university; whereas you will spend thousands upon thousands of dollars at a 4-year university, you might spend a grand or two per year at a community college. I took a ****there to finish up my general elective ****s for about 50 bucks

-allows you to get an early start on your college career without the pressure of a 4-year school. Provided you make sure your ****s are transferable, going to a community college is a cheap and easy way to start chipping away at your college career by taking transferable GE ****s and even major ****s

-if you do transfer to a 4-year after community college, you generally get to focus on your major ****s since you got the "boring" ****s out of the way at community.

On the other hand, there are some downsides:

-for some reason, some people look down on people that go to a JC. my parents were some of those; my mom would be like "What!??! You want to go to a JC like your idiot friend?!" when I told her about it lol.

-admissions to some 4-year universities tend to be harder on JC students. In my town there is both a nice university and a good JC, but the university only gives this JC a handful of openings per year per major. In short, if you go to a JC and plan to attend a university, you need to get good grades. In short, you might be working harder in a JC than if you had just applied to a university and gotten in

-I know a lot of people that went to a JC and didnt know what they wanted to do, and they ended up just kinda getting stuck. They'd party it up, smoke pot, work some job and say theyre going to school but they just kinda wallow in the experience.

Nobody respects community colleges and nobody will respect you if you go there. You'd better get a proper university degree after CC because otherwise you'll be a laughing stock.

For one thing, a degree is as much about status as it is about actual knowledge. Also, no decent self-respecting prof would teach at a community college, so you're not getting the best you could be in terms of education. Universities are just better if you can afford them. If you can't, then you don't really have a choice do you?

That's the whole point of going in the first place.
