Hm: Alien, Halloween and The Shining. Also, any Japanese horror flick. The atmosphere in all of them is terrific.

The original Nosferatu & The Haunting (1963) are the first films that come to mind.

I would personally pick The Exorcist just slight ahead of Psycho, Dawn of the Dead and The Shining.

Actually, the first film to feature zombies was White Zombie back in 1932. Romero did invent the traditional, shambling zombie though

I think what he probably meant was that Romero invented the flesh-eating zombies we all know and love. Zombie films have been made before that but more like the Haitian voodoo zombies.

The original Halloween. The music alone gives me the creeps.

I've also heard that The Orphanage which was directed by Guillermo del Toro is a really good horror movie. Has anybody seen it?

yea but white zombie was about "voodoo" im talking about what the word "zombie" now means to the majority of the world, because of Romero, he didnt invent the the zombie in a sense if you're talking about voodoo, but he did invent the flesh craving, infected dead bastards lol

The Orphanage was some very good gothic film. It's more a dark fairytale than horror. Also, Del Toro didn't direct but produced instead. His protege Juan Antonio Bayono directed the film. He's a new genre director to keep an eye on. His next film will be a film adaptation of David Moody's very underappreciated end-of-the-world novel, Hater.

Will have to check into it then. And thanks to you and Buck_Hotep for the correction over who directed the movie. :)

Hmmm I do like the Dawn Of The Dead remake, it might get my vote. I can understand if more people rate the original, but be it the original or the remake, Dawn of the Dead in some form could be classed as the greatest horror movie of all time, for the sake of forcing an answer out of myself.

However, there is one horror film I like even more.

It is a bit gross, but it is so much more than that. It is a beautiful and tragic love story as well. mrgeezer wrote a big summary of why the fly is a great film, I cant remember what he wrote word for word but I remember it summarized what I thought of the film very well.

Noes! Just because some guy shoves his ugly face through a door, shouldn't of made a film special in the way it's been known!

  1. The Excorsist (the most disturbing movie I've ever seen).
  2. The Thing
  3. Halloween (the original though I thought Rob Zombie's re-make was really good)
