Just be straight-forward and say, "Hey, I like you" and see what they say. It's better than beating around the bush and trying to drop unsuccessful hints and getting nowhere. If they reject you, yeah, it'll hurt for a bit, but you'll get over it.

How come? Cos IM is for geeks and stalkers. Go to him/her, and just ask them if they would like to mee up sometime. If you're up front and confident you should hopefully get a firm YES or No in kind.
I agree with some of the posters above. Don't tell them on IM. Don't go straight up either, get to know them, and yes drop hints, and tell them YOU like them, it's less awkward and sounds less arrogant.

First of all don't do it on IM, do it in person. Second of all, I wouldn't flat out tell someone you like them, it might freak them out a bit, seems akward. I would go up to the person and just talk to them, introduce yourself, if you have a class with them talk about that, just make conversation. Eventually if things seem to be going well, you can ask that person to lunch or coffee, something casual. Idk that's how i would do it but you do w/e.

Never on IM or TXTing them. Women like confidence, so simply walk up, and say you really like her and see what she says. If you're polite about it, she will either say yes, or politely decline, and it's gonna hurt for a while (speaking from experience) but you get over it eventually and on to the next one ;)
