For those that don't know, the 'Higg's Boson'is also refered to as the 'God Particle'. I know that CERN, using the LHC is conducting experiments to try and locate the Higg's Boson, but I don't understand where the theory originated.

Also I know that this particle explains gaps in theoretical physics but what does

a) It do? b) What gaps does it solve?

All the explanations I can find using Google are complicated and not really in my area of understand(While I'm very interested in physics it isn't my strong point).

It explains why things have mass

It's one of those thins that to really get you kind of have to dig deeply through all the complicated theories and that. To put it very simply though it's effectively a means to fill a gap in an explanation. It's supposed to give things mass. I'm going to assume Xaos will be along soon to correct me.

It came from the Higg's Boson particle oddly enough.

If I recall correctly, this is the particle who's creation is so abhorrent to nature that it sends ripples back through time causing birds carrying baguettes to foil our attempts to create one.

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higg%27s_boson Wikipedia is a godsend.

I think he wanted a more concise version of what it is rather than having to wiki walk all the way through quantum and theoretical physics sections.

I don't think its possible to understand it without some background in quantum physics. I know I don't get it.

I have this crazy feeling it's one of those things that no one really "gets". I guess in time we'll see, assuming they can get the LHC to actually function properly what with all the hangups it's had.

Wikipedia, while it is a treasure trove of infomation, is usually written by people who have a crazy amount of knowledge about that particular subject. I find that with Physics, since its not my strong point, I find it very hard to understand the long, complicated wikipedia explanations, and a simple google search won't give me the right, simple explanation.

I thought this thread was about Huge Bosoms. Not only was I disappointed my head nearly exploded when I went to that wikipedia link.

People get it. As far as I know it doesn't really demand any more understanding than particle physics in general.
