What does it really do for the viewer? Almost every TV show and film today rated at least PG (sometimes G) has those four letter words in it. Regardless if they're mild or strong, what purpose does it serve? Why are they there?

To stress the importance, devastation or anger in which a person's point is delivered, I guess. 'English mother****er, do you speak it?" wouldn't be as good as it is without the eff word in it...

I think everything would be a little more tolerable with some swearing.

That's like asking, why does red stuff come out of someone when they get stabbed a dozen times in the chest?

Well, that goes against what most of us are taught as children, which is you can get angry and frustrated without using swear words. But I can relate sometimes.

Key word there... I wouldn't even go as far as to say most. A lot of parents don't care if their kids swear, I know mine didn't. More importantly, characters in certain films and TV shows aren't brought up in the same way you are. I think for example a Gangster who kills people on screen isn't going to swear. If he has been brought up by an equally violent family he is going to have violent language as that is the language he would have heard at home.

A lot of things we are taught as children are useless once you reach a certain age.

There is no purpose. It's just there. Sadly, most people swear nowadays...

I know, what does it matter anyway? I hate that double standard that parents set:

You mustn't swear, but they can do it all they like, despite it only being a word. I agree that excessive swearing is pointless, but as I said, it helps emphasise a point...

it's used to be effective. Of course whether or not a script has swear words means very little. It's all in the delivery, and effectiveness of the actor/actress. Just watch the movie Ben-Hur, which has no swearing yet the lines in that movie are some of the best delivered and inspired lines in movie history. To Kill A Mockingbird is another good example

To make it slightly more realistic.

If you had a day like Jack Bauer i'm fairly certain every second word that came out of your mouth would be F***.

English motherfrigger, do you speak it?

Now doesn't that sound intimidating?
