Is it a pagan holiday, pagan-Christian holiday, St. Valentine's day?

Ok it has something to do with St. valentine but wth do I have to partner up for this lest I look like a failure? Is st. Valentine the first dude in history who thought "Hey, I know what women like and can not buy themselves! Chocolate and flowers and a piece of card with my name on it and her name on it! And a vibrating love-egg!"
