There have been many misconceptions between respect and toleration. Of course there are dictionaries that can tell you, but what is YOUR definition of respect?

What's your definition of respect? I'm not telling until you do.

Of course! When I respect a person, I treat them as my equal. I treat them the way I would like to be treated.

Appreciating another person as someone worthy of your time, patience, and help. This form of respect is what I seek to give all people. Whether I feel they deserve it is irrelevant.

Okay... treating someone as an equal is a form of respect, so what about toleration?

Realizing that other people are just as human as you are. That's my most fundamental definition of respect.

Dealing with someone you have no respect for so you can get a job done. (Chicken is good)

Looks like I'll have to do this anyway.

Toleration:

to allow to be or to be done without prohibition, hindrance, or contradiction;to put up with

Respect:

an act of giving particular attention:consideration
high or special regard:esteem:the quality or state of being esteemed

Note the word particular and special. Esteemed.

Toleration could be just baring somebodys person, or accepting them... But respect is regarding them highly or as equals.. Showing them as much respect as you would wish to recieve

Again I'll agree... so why not say all that in your opening post? You created the topic but made no effort to contribute. I'm just saying all of this so hopefully next time you post differently.

I'll agree with you on both points, respect is a feeling you save for those that have proven themselves as an individual that can be counted on in times of need... the definition of "need" can vary. Tolerance is pretty straight forward, one "Tolerates" an individual because they really have no choice.
