Mine would have to be Animal Collective, I pretty much enjoy all of their work.
You?

Neutral Milk Hotel (for their first album). If you meant the "indie" genre that is...if you meant indie label then I could list like a hundred bands. :P
Wonderful band :) On Avery Island is a great album(though if you were referencing their demos or EPs, those are rather good as well)Neutral Milk Hotel (for their first album). If you meant the "indie" genre that is...if you meant indie label then I could list like a hundred bands. :P

[QUOTE="Lockedge"]Explosions in the Sky are on an independent label. In contrast, so is Toby Keith. My choice is EitS, of course, but just saying that "Indie" comprises of a lot of different stuff.Wae416
I love Explosions in the Sky.
I, too, am going with them.

Hooray! Yeah I'm referencing On Avery Island. I liked it more than In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. More psychedelic influences. Explosions In The Sky is a good band too, although I'm not so sure they fall into the "indie" genre tag. :PBlack Mountain/Pink Mountaintops (Black Mountain is the main band and Pink Mountaintops is Sheledon McBean's side project, who is the frontman for Black Mountain.)
I've been listening to Band of Horses' Cease to Begin a lot lately. They stick out in my mind right now..

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]Let's not fall into that tedious "indie/independant" discussion, shall we? My favorite band in the indie subgenre is The Shins.Saturos3091I honestly don't know the difference. What are some traditional or archetypal characteristics of the genre? I only listen to a few bands most of which were recommended by friends so I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject.
There are varying definitions. I'd describe it as light alternative for the most part, but that's a very general definition.

Alright thanks. I figured it'd be similar to some sort of alternative rock with other influences.Eh, I've never been one to think "Indie" was a sound, so I just figure any band that's on an indie label, or who's spent significant time on an indie label and is now on a major (Modest Mouse, for instance) is Indie. :P I tend to prefer Aeroplane, if only because I have a bizarre fascination with "Oh Comely".Yeah I'm referencing On Avery Island. "In The Future" was my favourite album of last year(although it was close, edging out Have A Nice Life's "Deathconsciousness", which is also stellar) Wonderful band :)Black Mountain/Pink Mountaintops (Black Mountain is the main band and Pink Mountaintops is Sheledon McBean's side project, who is the frontman for Black Mountain.)

I'm not sure what Indy music is these days. I thought it was a genre, like Oasis, Blur, The Charletans, Bluetones. The bands always seem to be full of scruffy, tired looking yet still fairly clean cut guys singing along to a slow rhythm with strong choruses.
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is about a thousand times better than On Avery Island.WolfattheDoor34Really depends on your taste. I mean(just using an example from your avatar), I think "Boys & Girls in America" is incredibly better than "Separation Sunday". I enjoy both albums, but I find one to be a head up on the other.

Well of course everything depends on taste. I just can't be bothered to put 'IMO' after everything. FWIW I think Aeroplane and Sunday are both much more cohesive and emotional than their counterparts.
