When you are in a situation that could escalate to violence. Do you back off, do you get even more heated up, or do you just say, "whatever, dude," and back off?
Personally, I just smile, pat them on the shoulder, and walk off.

I lose my temper, I really don't take things physical though. Maybe a playful slap on the shoulder or arm, but that's it.
If I'm the only one at risk, I back off. I've let things spiral out of control before and it never ends well, no matter how satisfying you think it'd be. If someone's threatening my loved ones, I'll do what I have to. I was born with a big frame and broad shoulders, so people have always assumed I'm some idiotic brute or goon, but I hate violence.
The most hostile situation I've directly been in was a punch up in year 8 that got broken up before anything serious (school shirt got ripped & earlobe was sore for a few days but I busted his lip :D) & the occasional shove or jab but in sport but everything gets broken up quickly. I've been involved in a few on-field punch ups indirectly as well (team mate & someone else fighting), but I try to break them up, I'm not actually in there swinging away like some idiots do.
It depends. I don't go looking for violent altercations, but I have stood my ground in the past. Unless they're bigger than me, of course. :P
Dunno, never really been in that situation, but it might have to do with the fact that I'm bigger in size than 60% of guys that I meet, and that might add an intimidation factor, but if anyone actually knows me they will know I have a lot of patience and am too nice of a guy to hit anyone else. I much prefer to just joke around with people.
I tend to be calm about it. I almost never really back down, though I am very against violence of any kind unless justified.
Really??? Because if you smiled at me, patted me on the shoulder, and walked off when I was angry, I would get even more angry and I'd try to hurt you....When you are in a situation that could escalate to violence. Itend to walk away from situations where tempers are flared(especially if i am very angry) -- since i have the tendency to fly off handle when i lose my temper. Fights tend to get me into too much trouble -- once beat up a classmate black and blue in the middle of a class because he kept throwing chalk at me (am allergic to chalk btw) --was lucky to get away from that situation without getting arrested or something
same for me more or less. I try to avoid a fight, but at the same time be prepared for it.I wait until they take the first swing before we tango :)
I'm kinda short tempered but I will not throw the first punch.

It depends. Naturally I'm hostile by default, but when I'm in the right mood I back off a lot.
For example I was at the gym today and this guy said to me while I was using a machine:"Dude get it over with" and I looked him in the eyes and said "This is not you machine and I'm not going anywhere. In fact I was supposed to do 50 round but now I want to do 100 rounds and 3 times on a row". He said whatever...
